- Domata Peko's New Plan for Keeanu Benton Could Cost Steelers Big Money
The Pittsburgh Steelers face a decision this offseason: whether to extend Keeanu Benton . Insider Mark Kaboly previously indicated he wasn't sure if Benton fits into the team's long-term plans. However, regardless of what happens in contract talks this year, the Steelers have a plan for Benton in 2026. In fact, Benton may finally get to show his best fit on the defensive line.
Chris Harlan, TribLive's Steelers writer and analyst, gave a rundown of expectations for Benton . From the spring, he detailed what Benton's role would look like in a new defensive scheme.

"New defensive line coach Domata Peko has indicated this spring that there's more versatility in Benton's game beyond nose tackle. Peko, a 15-year NFL veteran, said he views Benton as capable of playing anywhere along the interior line. His boss, coach Mike McCarthy , has also expressed a desire to create position flexibility on the line," Harlan wrote.

New Steelers Defense, New Role for Benton
Benton had previously been forced into the nose tackle role in former defensive coordinator Teryl Austin 's defense. The results were mixed, as it became clear that Benton's best position was between the 2 and 4i techniques. Benton's strength differs from Yahya Black 's; Black fits the traditional nose tackle mold as an immovable force. Harlan's breakdown shows that Benton won't be forced into the 0 and 1i techniques full-time moving forward.

"A year ago, 85% of Benton's snaps came at nose tackle or left defensive tackle, according to PFF. He'll still be playing some nose tackle, but Peko suggested coaches may 'mix and match' more upfront," Harlan wrote.
Benton certainly has the versatility to play along the defensive line. However, he thrives most in one-on-one situations. In 2025, he recorded a career-high 5.5 sacks . His pressures and sacks came most often when interior offensive linemen had to block him one-on-one.

Another Breakout Year For Benton Coming?
If the Steelers don't get a deal done with Benton , he could be looking at a big payday next offseason. NFL teams are always searching for quality defensive tackles. If Benton exceeds last season's production, he could price himself out of Pittsburgh . Peko and defensive coordinator Patrick Graham will position him for massive wins on the interior.

Graham once served as a defensive line coach who helped coach the New England Patriots during their dynasty. If anyone can help Peko get the most out of Benton, it's Graham. He learned from one of the greatest defensive minds in Bill Belichick , after all. Benton stands to benefit tremendously from this new spark and from having a redefined role on defense.
