Dominic Zvada beat out the competition, made the Giants and now gets to walk into the part of the NFL that makes kickers famous or makes them a weekly headache.
There is no soft launch here. The undrafted rookie is the only kicker on the initial 53, and the first real test comes with the Cowboys in town. One late field goal can decide a division game. It is a lot to hand a rookie who was fighting for a job a few weeks ago.
Zvada has earned the chance. Schoen praised his strong leg and said he had been impressive since he arrived after the draft. John Harbaugh announced after the preseason finale that the job was his. The staff saw enough to make a clean decision.
The thing I like is that Zvada has not been treated like a camp novelty. The Giants have put him in the roster, paired him with Jordan Stout and Ben Mann, and moved forward. No safety blanket is sitting behind him.
The next part is where the fun starts.

Kickers get judged with no patience because their work is so clean. A quarterback can miss three throws and get another drive. A rookie kicker pushes one 46-yarder right in the fourth quarter and the whole building knows his name for the wrong reason.
Zvada will have to handle that without making it bigger than it needs to be. His preseason leg and confidence have both been clear. Schoen described him as mentally tough and said he has some personality, which is probably useful when 70,000 people are staring at you while the rest of the roster stands still.
Nobody needs a rookie kicker to turn into a star in September. The Giants need the ball to go through the uprights when the offense gets them into range. They need a reliable extra point. They need the routine kick to stay routine.
That sounds obvious, but it is a real part of how a team with playoff expectations survives close games. The Giants have chosen to trust a rookie at a position where one miss can change a week, and the pressure comes with the job.
