FOXBOROUGH - Even after jumping out to a 21-0 lead, then holding a 24-7 cushion at the half, Drake Maye knew with Josh Allen on the other sideline, it wouldn’t nearly be enough to beat Buffalo .
Following the 35-31 loss, Maye expressed some disappointment at the offense not being able to keep their foot on the gas in the second half.
They went scoreless in the third quarter, allowing Allen and the Bills back into the game, before TreVeyon Henderson ’s 65-yard score briefly put the Patriots back in the lead.
“(We) came out in the second half and just gotta make a play, pick up the first first down, I think that’s the biggest thing,” Maye said after the game. “There were some throws I wish I had back, but at the end of the day gotta keep the foot on the pedal and keep it going and kind of don’t let them dictate. It starts with me.”
The Bills scored five touchdowns on five straight possession running from the late in the second quarter, into the fourth.
Outside of Henderson’s score, the offense did little in the second half with a punt, interception, punt, and surrender on downs.
“We kind of felt during the week that we had a chance this was going to happen, and just gotta keep our foot on the pedal,” Maye said. “It happened in the first game, they came back, came back.”
The defense did make a stop, getting the ball back to Maye with 2:43 to go. Unlike the first game with the Bills in Week 5, where Maye drove the team for the eventual game-winning field goal, the offense fell flat.
After a 5-yard completion to Mack Hollins , Maye was sacked, and threw two incomplete passes.
“Just gotta make a play and do my part when we had the ball and a chance to win the game, go win the game,” Maye said.
On the day, Maye completed just 14 of 23 passes for 155 yards. It was the first time he was held under 200 yards this season, with 203 yards the previous low.
He was sacked three times, ran for two scores and threw an interception.
