FOXBOROUGH — With one week remaining in the season, Drake Maye has emerged as a significant favorite to win the NFL's MVP Award at sportsbooks.
The Patriots quarterback has delivered a terrific second season, leading the NFL in completion percentage (71.7%), EPA per play (0.25), QBR (76.5) and passer rating (112.9). Maye has thrown for 4,203 passing yards, 30 touchdowns to eight interceptions, and he's run for 409 yards and four touchdowns, too.
As such, Maye's Patriots sit 13-3 and AFC East Champions.
When asked about being in the MVP conversation on Wednesday afternoon, Maye pointed to team success as a catalyst.
"It's just an honor," Maye said. "I've told everybody, said some things in the locker room: It's us. It's not just me. It's us in that locker room. It's really a team deal, I think. They say it's a player, but I think wins help that. Obviously there's been some great seasons around the league from a lot of players. It's an honor, but at the same time we've got work to do."
In a two-quarterback race, Maye's odds at DraftKings Sportsbook are currently -295, while Matthew Stafford is second at +225. Maye said he doesn't have much of a relationship with the 37-year-old Stafford, but he's long been a fan.
"I saw him play here last year and he was fun to watch," Maye said. "I've watched him on tape a lot, some crossover games, and he's special with the football. The way he throws it and how he fits it in tight windows. His no-look (passes), he's got some swagger.
"So big fan of his game. I know I played him last year and talked to him briefly after the game, but I probably should have went up before the game. I've been a big fan for a long time of his. Just talk about natural throwers and any platform, any angle, it's at a really high level. It's been fun watching him."
Earlier on Wednesday, Mike Vrabel was asked about individual accomplishments at stake on Sunday against the Dolphins, and it sounded like the Patriots coach would be just fine with Maye delivering another MVP-style performance if it led to a victory.
"If it's anything that can help the team win, I'm all in favor of it," Vrabel said. "We've talked about this maybe three or four weeks ago about chasing wins and not plays. And so, I want those to all align. And I can always appreciate production, I get it. Whether that's tackles, play time, sacks, catches, touchdowns. But really what I'm focused on is wins, and I have to try to balance that between individual players, then units and then a team."
