How Ducks' offensive depth chart prediction changed after spring game
The spring football season has come and gone for the Oregon Ducks, and it ended with a largely entertaining spring game last weekend, which the Combat Ducks won over the Fighting Ducks, 17-10, thanks to a walkoff touchdown from Dakorien Moore.
While the final score is largely insignificant, the spring game did give us a good look at the new iteration of the roster in Eugene, highlighting the play from a bunch of young talent and several veteran players fighting for snaps.
So, what did we learn when all was said and done? While it is too early to write a depth chart in pen, I think we can get a general sense of who will play where and which players will have the biggest roles. Going into the spring game, we predicted what the depth chart would look like, and after seeing four quarters of action, here's how our opinions have changed:
Quarterback
-
Starter: Dante Moore
-
Backup: Dylan Raiola
-
Other Names to Know: Brock Thomas / Akili Smith Jr.
-
Post-Spring Changes:Switched Thomas and Smith Jr.
Analysis: Dante Moore is the starter, and despite Brock Thomas getting reps ahead of Dylan Raiola in the spring game, I fully believe that Raiola is the second-best QB on the roster and will serve as QB2 this year. The biggest change to my depth chart here is flipping Thomas and Akili Smith Jr. I think that KJ sits at No. 4 on the depth chart right now.
Running Back
-
Starter:Jordon Davison
-
Backup: Dierre Hill Jr.
-
Other Names to Know: Simeon Price / Tradarian Ball / Da'Jaun Riggs / Brandon Smith
-
Post-Spring Changes:Moved Simeon Price Up
Analysis:Whichever way you want to order them, Jordon Davison and Dierre Hill are RB1 and RB2 on the roster. Behind that is where things get jumbled. I think Simeon Price is likely the guy, based on what we saw in the spring game, but young players like Tradarian Ball, Dink Riggs, and Brandon Smith will get into the mix as well.
Tight End
-
Starter: Jamari Johnson
-
Backup: Markus Dixon
-
Other Names to Know: Kendre Harrison / Andrew Olesh
-
Post-Spring Changes:Moved Markus Dixon up
Analysis: While I didn't necessarily see anything from either Kendre Harrison or Andrew Olesh that "wowed" me in the spring game, I was impressed by Markus Dixon, who lowered his shoulder on one play and made a couple of defenders pay. I think he could end up having a bigger role in the offense than we originally believed.
Wide Receiver (X)
-
Starter: Dakorien Moore
-
Backup: Evan Stewart
-
Other Names to Know: Gatlin Bair
-
Post-Spring Changes:None
Analysis: I'm not changing much as far as the WR depth goes after the spring game. I think we saw pretty much what we expected to see, with some elite talent, but some questions as to who is going to step up as the depth pieces.
Wide Receiver (Z)
-
Starter: Jeremiah McClellan
-
Backup: Evan Stewart
-
Other Names to Know: Dakorien Moore / Jalen Lott
-
Post-Spring Changes:None
Analysis: Again, it's tough to predict this position exactly with as many players as are going to rotate around, but it feels safe to assume that you are going to see a lot of Jeremiah McClellan, Dakorien Moore, and Evan Stewart in this spot.
Wide Receiver (Y/Slot)
-
Starter: Iverson Hooks
-
Backup: Messiah Hampton
-
Other Names to Know: Evan Stewart / Jalen Lott
-
Post-Spring Changes:Moved Messiah Hampton up
Analysis: I moved Messiah Hampton up in the slot over Evan Stewart because I think he could end up having a bigger role this year than I originally thought. It wouldn't surprise me to see him take over in the Cooper Perry-type role this year for the Ducks .
Left Tackle
-
Starter: Fox Crader
-
Backup: Ziyarre Addison
-
Other Names to Know: Tommy Tofi / Immanuel Iheanacho
-
Post-Spring Changes:None
Analysis: While we learned a lot about the offensive line at the spring game, I think we pretty much saw what we were expecting to see at the left tackle spot. Fox Crader is the favorite to win the job, but Ziyarre Addison looked good in reserve.
Left Guard
-
Starter: Douglas Utu
-
Backup: Kawika Rogers
-
Other Names to Know: Trent Ferguson / Tommy Tofi
-
Post-Spring Changes:Added Trent Ferguson
Analysis: At the top, I still think the LG spot will be either Utu or Rogers, despite Utu playing RG in the spring game. I also added Trent Ferguson to the list after seeing him play some LG in the spring game.
Center
-
Starter: Iapani Laloulu
-
Backup: Devin Brooks
-
Other Names to Know: Koloi Keli / Bryce Boulton
-
Post-Spring Changes:Moved Koloi Keli up
Analysis: Iapani Laloulu will be the starter, and I think it's safe to say that Devin Brooks is the backup. Behind them, though, I wouldn't be surprised if it's Koloi Keli who is taking the third-team reps, which he got in the spring game.
Right Guard
-
Starter: Dave Iuli
-
Backup: Douglas Utu
-
Other Names to Know: Michael Bennett
-
Post-Spring Changes:Move Douglas Utu up
Analysis: I think Dave Iuli gets the starting spot again, but I moved Utu ahead of Bennett after seeing him play some RG in the spring game. While I think Utu starts at LG this year, I think they could easily move him around.
Right Tackle
-
Starter: Michael Bennett
-
Backup:Zac Stascausky
-
Other Names to Know: Tommy Tofi / Gernorris Wilson
-
Post-Spring Changes:Move Zac Stascausky up
Analysis: Hand up, I did not consider Zac Stascausky in the mix for the RT spot on the depth chart, but he got starting reps with the Fighting Ducks in the spring game, and could very well end up as the RT2 or RT3 when all is said and done. I think that Michael Bennett will win the starting job, though.
