The Philadelphia Flyers surprised NHL fans on Friday after signing Leo Carlsson to a massive offer sheet , giving him an $18 million AAV for five years, which is now the highest AAV in the league. While the Anaheim Ducks have seven days to either match the offer sheet or let Carlsson walk, rumors potentially reveal what kind of deal the franchise was aiming for.
It's said that the Ducks were hoping to give the 21-year-old center an AAV closer to $10 million to $12 million , according to NHL insider Kevin Weekes. That's also the AAV the front office was hoping to offer Cutter Gauthier . Either way, Weekes claims the Flyers' offer sheet will affect Connor Bedard and Macklin Celebrini .
"Per my conversations earlier in the week with sources, the Anaheim Ducks were hoping to be between 10M-12M AAV for Carlsson and Gauthier, knowing Sennecke will be next in line," reported Weekes. The Philadelphia Flyers now come off the top rope. This also impacts Bedard and Celebrini."
Carlsson just finished his third season in the NHL, playing a major role in leading the Ducks to their first playoff appearance since the 2017-18 campaign. He played 70 games for the club and recorded a career-high 67 points (29 goals, 38 assists), which is the second most on the team, with only Cutter Gauthier (69) having more.
While the Flyers' offer sheet for Leo Carlsson will seemingly reset the market, the Ducks have a tough decision to make. Matching the offer sheet brings the Swedish native back to Anaheim for the next five years. However, letting him walk and play for the Flyers gives the club four future first-round picks. Decisions, decisions.
