- Eagles safety Cole Wisniewski could become a training camp sleeper
The Philadelphia Eagles ' safety competition has produced no shortage of storylines this offseason. Andrew Mukuba is expected to play a significant role after arriving as one of the organization's top draft picks in 2025, while Marcus Epps adds valuable starting experience . Veterans and younger players alike continue battling for depth roles, and even undrafted rookie cornerback Kapena Gushiken has generated early buzz after catching defensive coordinator Vic Fangio's attention during spring practices.
Lost in much of that discussion is Cole Wisniewski. That may prove to be a mistake for those who ignore him. He didn't arrive with the draft pedigree or early attention of some of his other teammates, but he possesses traits that have consistently earned opportunities in Philadelphia's defense.

Physicality still has value on the Eagles ' roster
Not every safety succeeds because of elite speed or exceptional coverage ability. Some carve out NFL careers by playing downhill, tackling well and bringing a physical presence whenever they're on the field. That's where Wisniewski has quietly made his case so far.
He's a 2023 First-Team FCS All-American and First-Team All-MVFC honoree. He's a two-time FCS national champion. Coverage remains an area where he can continue to develop, but he has shown a willingness to attack the run and finish plays as a reliable tackler.
Those qualities have even led some observers to compare aspects of his game to former Eagles safety Reed Blankenship . That isn't because they're identical players. That's because both rely more on instincts, toughness and consistency than elite athletic traits.

Those comparisons won't earn Wisniewski a roster spot, but they help explain why the Eagles remain interested in his development—everyEvery practice matters. Philadelphia's safety room appears deeper than many expected entering training camp.
Mukuba offers exciting upside, Epps provides veteran stability, ity and Cooper DeJean 's versatility gives Fangio flexibility to move players around depending on the situation. That depth doesn't eliminate Wisniewski's opportunity. Instead, it raises the importance of every practice rep, special teams drill and each preseason snap.
Players competing for the final roster spots often separate themselves through consistency, effort and versatility rather than highlight-reel plays. The Eagles have built one of the NFL's deepest rosters by developing players over time instead of expecting immediate results. Wisniewski fits that model. Whether he ultimately earns a spot on the 53-man roster or continues developing on the practice squad, his physical style of play gives him a legitimate opportunity to remain part of Philadelphia's long-term plans.
He may not enter training camp as the most talked-about safety on the roster, but if he continues doing the little things well, he shouldn't be overlooked during one of the Eagles' most competitive position battles. In a competition expected to remain fluid throughout the summer, Cole Wisniewski has every opportunity to force his way into the conversation.

He may not enter training camp as the most talked-about safety on the roster, but roster spots aren't won by offseason hype. They're earned through consistency, reliability, lity and making the most of every opportunity. Wisniewski has already shown he embraces the physical style of football the Eagles v. If he continues stacking productive practices and preseason performances, he could force Philadelphia's coaching staff into making a much more difficult decision than many expect.
