The Philadelphia Eagles added another contestant to their crowded receiver room Thursday, signing Tahj Washington and waiving Brandon Hayes ahead of Friday's preseason finale against the Cincinnati Bengals . The team announced the moves as Philadelphia continues evaluating the bottom of its roster before final cuts.
Washington, 25, was selected by the Miami Dolphins in the seventh round of the 2024 NFL draft. He missed his rookie season because of an injury and appeared in six games last season, recording three catches for 37 yards. Miami waived him Tuesday. The former Memphis and Southern California receiver now gets a late opportunity to impress an Eagles staff still sorting through its depth behind DeVonta Smith , Dontayvion Wicks and Makai Lemon.
Hollywood Brown and Darius Cooper have strengthened their cases for the roster, while Britain Covey and Elijah Moore remain in the conversation for the remaining opportunities. Washington arrives with little time to learn offensive coordinator Sean Mannion's system and distinguish himself.
His addition could also become part of Philadelphia's practice-squad evaluation rather than changing the projected receiving rotation. Hayes, an undrafted rookie from Southeastern Louisiana, had multiple stints with the Eagles this offseason. His departure creates the opening for Washington's audition.
For Washington, the immediate challenge is making the most of whatever opportunities become available. Special-teams value could help him extend his stay beyond the final weekend of the preseason.
