Moro Ojomo and Fred Johnson went after each other during practice, but that's not a sign of locker room issues.
The biggest storyline out of Philadelphia Eagles training camp this week? A good old-fashioned fight. And before the national media tries to spin this into some kind of locker room dysfunction narrative, let me just say it: I like it. I like the energy. Let's spice it up a little bit.
Now, Vic Fangio is probably going to make these guys run sprints for the entire day after this, but besides that, I love seeing these guys get ultra competitive. Moro Ojomo and Fred Johnson got into it near the end of practice, squaring up after a play. It looked like things had settled down, and then Ojomo went after Johnson again and tackled him. These guys were brawling, scuffling, and honestly? It just feels like football is about to be back.
Let's be completely honest here. The last couple years of Eagles training camp have not been that enticing for us as fans because most of the positional battles are already decided. We know everything going on. Philly fans are insane to the 10th degree. We already know every guy on the team, their strengths, their weaknesses. There's nothing for us to really find out at this point.
I know the Eagles have a new offensive coordinator and a new play-caller in Sean Mannion , and all of that is great, but we don't really see much of the scheme until the regular season. It's not like Philadelphia plays its starters in the preseason anyway, so we won't find a lot out until Week 1. That's why this kind of competitive fire matters.
It tells you these guys are hungry. They're going at each other. They care. Obviously you don't want anybody getting hurt, but a scuffle between two guys competing? That's football, man. That's what training camp is supposed to look like.
Running back Tank Bigsby was asked about the incident after practice, and his response was perfect.
"That's a way of brothers saying I love you just in a different way," Bigsby said.
And he's right. If you've ever played competitive sports, or even just pickup games at the park or the court, you know that sometimes you just get into it in the heat of the moment. When it's done, you shake hands, you hug each other, and you're all good to go. By all indications, nothing crazy happened here. Nobody got hurt, nothing personal was said. They just got after it, and that's ball. It happens.
And I want to be clear: I'm not even really directing this at Eagles fans. We get it. We know what training camp fights are. I'm talking to the national media outlets who love to take a scuffle and turn it into a three-day storyline about team chemistry concerns. We're good. Everything's fine. The Eagles are just out here competing, and I'm so ready for the regular season to get here.
So before anybody tries to take this out of context and run with some narrative about Eagles dysfunction, just stop. The players themselves are telling you everything is fine. This isn't a story about problems in the locker room. This is a story about guys competing and pushing each other, which is exactly what you want to see out of a team with Super Bowl aspirations.
