Los Angeles Dodgers reliever Edwin Diaz , who has lost the closer role until he proves otherwise , is starting to work his way back.
Diaz had another live batting practice, and it was his "best one yet," according to manager Dave Roberts.
Speaking to the media, including Dodgers Nation, Roberts made it clear that Diaz will need a rehab assignment before returning, and it could start sooner after his live session on Friday.
Diaz is on the injured list with neck inflammation, something that the team believes could be causing a mechanical issue.

If the minor league schedule does not work out in the Dodgers' favor, Diaz will need to do some more live sessions before they bring him back into the bullpen fold.
Diaz will come out as a lower-leverage arm, working his way up the trust tree as things progress shortly after that, Roberts has explained in the past.
Tanner Scott has a hold on the closer role for now, based on his work throughout the season, but Diaz has the talent and profile to take it away with some good outings.
The main thing to watch with Diaz is his command, since it was a big weakness. His fastball had new life after his elbow surgery, but his movement and command weren't good enough.

In his long career, Diaz has been one of the most reliable closers in baseball, and that guy is still in there somewhere.
By all accounts, the Dodgers will give him the opportunity to prove himself again, at least during the regular season.
Diaz, of his own accord, feels confident that he can get back to that version.
"Yeah, because that's why they signed me here to be the closer," Diaz said to the media, including Dodgers Nation.
"But I haven't pitched good this year, so you know, like I said, Tanner is doing a really good job. Really happy for him."
