- El Aynaoui’s Time Is Now: Leipzig’s Midfield Suddenly Belongs To Him
Neil El Aynaoui arrived at RB Leipzig on deadline day with little time to settle in. Now, barely into his Die Roten Bullen career, circumstances have accelerated the process. With the club losing midfielders one after another, the Moroccan has suddenly been pushed into a role that could define his entire season.
And he has already shown that he can handle it.

El Aynaoui was brought in from AS Roma because Leipzig saw something they were missing: a midfielder capable of giving their possession structure while still covering enormous amounts of ground. The idea was never simply to add another body to the squad. RB wanted a player who could influence the game from deep.
The injuries have only made that need more urgent.
Christoph Baumgartner and Rocco Reitz are unavailable, while Assan Ouédraogo faces a lengthy absence after suffering another shoulder injury. Suddenly, the Red Bulls are heading into Sunday's meeting with Bayer Leverkusen without a significant part of their midfield options.
That leaves El Aynaoui with an opportunity that perhaps arrived earlier than anyone expected.

His home debut against Hamburg offered a glimpse of what Leipzig hoped they were getting. The 24-year-old covered 11.91 kilometres, more than any other player on the pitch, while completing 93 percent of his passes. Those numbers are impressive, but they only tell part of the story.
The more important aspect was where the ball kept going.
El Aynaoui repeatedly made himself available in front of Leipzig's defence, took responsibility for progressing possession, and helped establish the rhythm of the game. Rather than simply playing as another midfielder within the system, he increasingly looked like the player through whom the system was functioning.
That is exactly what coach Martin Demichelis wants.
"Neil is a playmaker in the number six position. And he covers an incredible amount of ground"
- Martin Demichelis said after the midfielder's debut.

It is an interesting description because the traditional image of a number six is often associated with defensive protection. El Aynaoui offers something different. His defensive work allows him to occupy the position, but his real value could come from what he does once Leipzig have the ball.
He can become the team's first platform.
That distinction matters for Leipzig. When the deepest midfielder is comfortable receiving under pressure, turning and finding the next pass, the entire team can move higher up the pitch. The centre-backs have a reliable outlet. The full-backs can advance. The attacking midfielders can position themselves between the lines.
In other words, El Aynaoui does not necessarily have to produce the final pass to become Leipzig's playmaker.

He can be the player who makes everything before it possible.
There were already signs of this against Hamburg. After defeats to Werder Bremen and Como , Leipzig needed more than three points. They needed control, and El Aynaoui helped provide it.
His own assessment was telling.
"I'm not just a little bit happy, I'm really happy about my first home game. Not just because of my performance, but because we showed the right reaction as a team."
- Neil El Aynaoui, after his first home game.
That team-first mentality is important because El Aynaoui is not arriving at the Red Bull Arena with the profile of a player demanding the spotlight. His career has instead been built around consistency and responsibility.
He spent last season at Roma after establishing himself at Lens , making 35 competitive appearances for the Italian club. His move to Leipzig came after concerns that his opportunities could become more limited following Roma's decision to bring in Marten de Roon , a player with a long-standing relationship with Gasperini.

Leipzig saw the opening and moved quickly.
They could not afford a permanent transfer this summer, but the loan deal includes an option to buy worth around €25 million, meaning this season could ultimately become an extended audition for a permanent place in Saxony.
The timing makes that audition even more interesting.
El Aynaoui was initially used as an eight, with Nicolas Seiwald occupying the deeper role. But Seiwald's strengths are more naturally suited to winning duels and protecting the midfield than to orchestrating possession. El Aynaoui offers Demichelis another dimension from the same position.

And the coach has already made clear that he appreciates the competition.
"Neil is a fantastic addition to the team; we need guys like him."
- Captain David Raum has also welcomed his arrival.
There is another reason to believe El Aynaoui could adapt quickly. Professionalism has been part of his upbringing. His father, former world-class tennis player Younes El Aynaoui, reached No. 14 in the ATP rankings and instilled habits that his son still credits today.

Sleep properly. Eat properly. Hydrate. Recover properly.
The details are simple, but elite football is often decided by how consistently players execute the simple things.
Now Leipzig need El Aynaoui to execute them on the pitch.
