- Elephant Rumblings: World Series Marches On as Offseason Approaches

Good morning, A's fans! Happy Wednesday.
Yesterday's Game 4 of the World Series was a tense extra-inning thriller. Rookie shortstop Cooper Pratt's solo home run in the 12th inning gave the Brewers a 3-2 lead. However, Milwaukee was unable to secure the victory, as the Rays rallied for two runs in the bottom of the inning.
Tampa Bay's thrilling comeback extended the series, setting up Game 5 tonight. It also prolongs the start of the offseason, which many fans have been dreading due to the potential owner-imposed lockout beginning Dec. 1.
Given the major labor and economic dispute centered around the controversial idea of implementing a salary cap and salary floor, the lockout could extend into the spring and risk delaying the start of the 2027 season. During that period, MLB-related transactions and player-team contact will be restricted, meaning there is an incentive for teams to sign free-agent players or complete trades in November before a new labor agreement potentially upends the league's economic structure.
Considering their payroll limitations, the Athletics will likely not be active at the top tier of the free-agent market. The team is unlikely to pursue the top free agent this offseason, elite left-hander Tarik Skubal, who was a massive A's fan as a child.
Nevertheless, there will be other pitchers whom A's president of baseball operations Taylor Smith can pursue in free agency or acquire via trade. Clay Holmes and Nick Martinez are two free-agent arms who would be good fits for this club. If the 2027 season proceeds as scheduled and the Athletics fail to improve their pitching staff, that would feel like a missed opportunity to take the next step in what could be a wide-open American League West.
In the meantime, enjoy Game 5 tonight as it may be the last baseball game for a while. First pitch is at 5 p.m. PT.
Overview of what's to come. Many players may sign new contracts or get traded before the owner-imposed lockout begins December 1.
The Athletics' farm system needs more depth between its top-tier prospects and organizational depth players. How should newly hired President of Baseball Operations Taylor Smith go about upgrading the team's player pipeline?
A's first baseman Nick Kurtz is the best bet to challenge Jimmie Foxx's single-season franchise home run record. Can the "Big Amish" get close, or will Foxx's record stay unbroken?
What do you think about this article? Taira seems intriguing, although the last time the A's signed a Japanese pitcher, the experiment failed.
