FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – "The Jaylen Reed trade."
That's how New England Patriots executive vice president of player personnel Eliot Wolf described it, which was notable as the question he was asked was directly phrased as "The Kayshon Boutte trade."
He explained that Jaylen was a guy they had circled on their board during the 2025 NFL Draft.
"Jaylen was a guy that we identified in the draft process as someone that we might pick, and he ended up going before we could take him," Wolf began. "Followed his career last year with Houston , and thought it was pretty remarkable that, as a rookie who hadn't played much during the regular season, they trusted him enough to play the majority of the playoff games, and just continued to follow him. And when we determined that he might be available, that he was someone that we wanted to acquire.
"Thank Kayshon for everything over the last four years, or three years that he was here" Wolf continued. "Showed tremendous growth and progress as a person and a player, and excited for him and his opportunity.
"But this was about the Patriots and doing what's best for our organization."
Wolf was also questioned about the timing of this trade and why it came now rather than waiting to deal him prior to the trade deadline.
"I mean, again, you know, we have a deep receiver room. I think that's really what it came down to," he said before being asked if trading him to the Texans, a conference rival, was a concern. "No, there was no concern about that, and I don't think there was any concern for them to send us a safety that we think can play."
With that, Wolf was also asked if Boutte requesting a trade factored into the timing.
"No, it didn't. Obviously, by getting Jaylen now, he gets an opportunity to work with the defensive coaches. Safety is obviously a tough position to learn," Wolf explained. "No that didn't really factor in. Kayshon was very professional throughout the whole off-season. Did a nice job."
