Some see Justin Herbert as what a quarterback is supposed to look like, others see Justin Herbert and question whether he can even see.
Even if you didn't consider Herbert a top-10 quarterback entering the NFL season, you probably didn't think he was capable of having a season as bad as he's having. Through seven games, the Los Angeles Chargers are 0-7, with Herbert throwing five touchdowns and 10 interceptions on the season. The Chargers assembled what was supposed to be an all-star staff of coaches led by Jim Harbaugh and Mike McDaniel, but they've only made Herbert worse. And the downfall has led Speakeasy host Emmanuel Acho to believe Herbert is either throwing games on purpose, or he just can't see.
"Somebody gotta call an ophthalmologist cause Herbert can't see," Acho ranted Sunday night after Herbert's latest brutal performance. "He can't see. He needs LASIK. He can't see! It is impossible to make the throws Justin Herbert makes on a weekly basis if his eyes were functioning properly. It's impossible to do it. Impossible! He seemingly throws it directly to a defender every single week.
"At this juncture in time, there are only a couple options. Either Herbert is invested in the opponent, either Herbert is gambling on the opponent, or Herbert simply cannot see."
At 0-7 with twice as many picks as touchdowns, Herbert deserves just about every possible criticism he gets right now. But if there is a line on criticizing Herbert, accusing him of betting on the other team or requiring medical attention is probably it.
Acho did admit Herbert is too talented to make these mistakes, especially coming off a bye week where he should have been able to fully prepare for his opponent, the Los Angeles Rams. Still, jumping to something as egregious as Herbert having a betting interest in the opposition is a bit much.
At the beginning of this season, ESPN NFL analyst Dan Orlovsky defended his unwavering allegiance to Herbert by controversially saying he is what a quarterback "should look like." And throughout Herbert's career, Orlovsky has not been alone in his assessment. NFL analysts constantly tout Herbert as having the potential to be one of the best quarterbacks in NFL history, despite never winning a playoff game.
But with the season he's having right now, it's hard for anyone to defend Herbert. And as long as Herbert is on the field in his current state, Acho is confident it will keep leading to losses.
