STILLWATER, Okla. — Oklahoma State head coach Eric Morris remains optimistic that two key defensive players could return for Saturday's road matchup against Kansas State, while the Cowboys may have to wait longer for starting tight end Carson Kolb.
During Tuesday's media availability, Morris provided updates on linebacker Tate Romney and defensive end Jaleel Johnson, both of whom exited Oklahoma State's 51–49 loss at Iowa State with injuries.
"We remain hopeful that they can get back this week," Morris said. "We'll see how that ends up this week."
Neither player has been confirmed available for Saturday's contest, leaving their status uncertain as the Cowboys prepare for another Big 12 road test.
Defensive injuries create uncertainty
Romney and Johnson both left Saturday's game against Iowa State during the second half. Romney was dealing with a hamstring issue, while Johnson was seen on the sideline with his left arm in a sling.
Their potential absences would present another challenge for an Oklahoma State defense coming off one of its most difficult performances of the season. The Cowboys surrendered 581 total yards and 51 points against Iowa State, including 221 rushing yards from Cyclones running back Aiden Flora.
Romney has been an important contributor at linebacker, recording 54 tackles this season, including nine against Iowa State. Johnson has contributed 16 tackles and two sacks, providing experience along Oklahoma State's defensive front.
Both players remain listed as starters on the Cowboys' depth chart entering the Kansas State matchup, although their inclusion does not guarantee they will be available.
Carson Kolb still weeks away
While Morris expressed optimism about Romney and Johnson, the outlook was less encouraging for Kolb. Asked about the tight end's potential return, Morris indicated that Saturday's game is likely too soon.
"I wouldn't say this weekend, probably a week or two more," Morris said.
Kolb suffered a left foot injury during Oklahoma State's victory over Colorado and was subsequently ruled out against Iowa State. The Oregon State transfer earned a starting role during fall camp and has recorded seven receptions for 58 yards and two touchdowns this season.
With Kolb sidelined, Oklahoma State has additional options at tight end, including Morgan McPhaul, Donovan Green and Oscar Hammond. McPhaul has also contributed in the passing game, while Hammond provides another receiving option for quarterback Drew Mestemaker.
Another important road test awaits
Oklahoma State enters Saturday's matchup at Kansas State with a 5–3 overall record and a 3–2 mark in Big 12 play. The Cowboys are seeking their sixth victory to become bowl eligible while attempting to rebound from a frustrating loss in Ames.
Getting Romney and Johnson back would provide additional depth and experience for a defense looking to improve after allowing more than 500 yards against Iowa State.
For now, their availability remains uncertain, and Oklahoma State will continue monitoring their progress throughout the week. The Cowboys' upcoming player availability reports should provide a clearer picture of which players could return against the Wildcats.
