Erin Andrews faced a nightmare scenario on Sunday while covering the Detroit Lions against the Minnesota Vikings. The sideline reporter admitted she was "really emotional" after witnessing linebacker Jack Campbell suffer a frightening neck injury during the fourth quarter of the 19-15 Lions home win at Ford Field.
An ambulance transported Campbell to a nearby hospital after he lay still. This specific moment highlighted the brutal reality that sideline reporters must handle when players face life-altering trauma.

The Personal Fear Behind The Broadcast
Andrews knows exactly what it looks like when a family member gets hurt on the field. Since 2017, she has been married to former NHL player Jarret Stoll, with whom she has ridden in an ambulance on multiple occasions. "I get really emotional about this stuff because I've been in an ambulance a couple of times with my husband, and it's just really hard," Andrews said, according to the New York Post .
The fear is real for her, not just for the cameras. A text from a trainer saying "Hey, you gotta come down here" made the situation feel like "scary s–t" to the 48-year-old reporter. She also received a message from an ex-teammate of her husband who is a huge Lions fan, asking, "How bad is this?"
The confusion on the field was palpable as players waited for news. The defense had to return to the field while Aidan Hutchinson pointed to the tunnel where Campbell was taken. Andrews noted that the players did not know what was happening. "The biggest thing that we saw, and it was happening right away … those poor Lions and Vikings players didn't know what was going on," Andrews explained.

She felt bad even asking the Lions' public relations team for an update. "That's the hard part of what we do, having to report on it," she went on. The goal is to handle the situation with grace while letting trainers do their jobs.
Medical Reality And Recovery Hope
While the scene was terrifying, the medical update on Wednesday brought a different tone. Campbell admitted he is "very optimistic" about his recovery. He disclosed that he has "full movement" in his lower body and is "continuing to make progress with movement in my upper body."
Dr. Ari Berg, a spine surgeon at Hackensack Meridian Health, told The Post on Thursday that the movement in his legs is "definitely encouraging." The injury likely involves central cord syndrome according to Dr. Berg, which happens when the neck hyperextends and causes bruising to the center of the spinal cord.

Berg explained the mechanics of why the legs move before the arms. "At the very center of the spinal cord is where you have control of the arms," Berg said, according to the New York Post . "More toward the periphery of the spinal cord, you have control of the legs."
This is why patients often see weakness in the upper extremities first. The injury is incomplete, meaning the spinal cord appears fully intact. However, the timeline remains uncertain. "It could be weeks. It could be months. It could take longer than that. It's just too soon to call," Dr. Berg went on. Campbell remains encouraged by the progress made in such a short period.
The Hard Part Of Sports Journalism
The incident on Sunday shows the difficult line reporters walk between giving fans news and respecting human pain. Andrews thought about Campbell's family, his wife Megan, and their son Cooper who was born in July. "It's just tough, because I [think about] his family, his wife, his kid. It's the s–tty part of the game. It's the real part of the game," she added. The crowd felt an overwhelming sense of confusion as the game paused. This event proves that the job involves more than just announcing stats or player names.

Reporting on injuries like this requires a thick skin that even veterans like Andrews struggle to maintain. The text messages from concerned fans and the silence of the players on the field create a heavy atmosphere. Andrews said she just wants to let the trainers do their gigs while providing accurate updates.
