What was supposed to be a season full of high hopes for the San Francisco Giants turned into an abject failure in 2026.
The Giants finished the year with a 65-97 record, which was their worst since the 2017 season. Part of the reason San Francisco struggled so much was because of a failure to produce quality pitching.

Of the 30 Major League Baseball teams, the Giants finished 23rd in ERA (4.33), 24th in WHIP (1.36), and they tied the Philadelphia Phillies and Texas Rangers for 18th in opposing batting average (.248). Their arms simply weren't good enough to contribute to wins.
Among those who struggled was right-hander Logan Webb, who experienced a noticeable regression from the 2025 to the 2026 season. Let's evaluate how he did.
Webb's regression for Giants
Webb, 29, entered 2026 coming off a year in which he logged a 15-11 record with a 3.22 ERA across 34 starts and 207 innings of work.
Unfortunately, he experienced a precipitous drop-off this season when he posted an 8-9 record with a 4.31 ERA across 27 starts and 160.2 innings pitched. Webb also notched nearly 100 fewer strikeouts between his career high of 224 in 2025 and 2026 (134).

Webb did earn his third All-Star selection this season, but it does not change the fact that his production fell not just from 2025, but from years past as well. During his eight MLB seasons, Webb's best came in 2022 when he logged a 15-9 record with a 2.90 ERA across 32 starts and 192.1 innings pitched.
Webb survived the Trade Deadline in August that saw his teammates Robbie Ray, Luis Arraez and Heliot Ramos shipped off to other destinations. He is under contract through the 2028 season, in which he will make $24 million, after making $23 million in 2027.
Webb is still a very good pitcher, but he did not have the type of season that we are accustomed to him producing. His struggles fell in line with the troubles that the pitching staff was dealing with at large, so this is not an attempt to single him out and chastise him.
However, it is important to recognize his regression because of what he is capable of doing. For the Giants to be better, Webb is going to have to be at his best in 2027. If he isn't, there is a chance he will not play out his contract in San Francisco.
