Pittsburgh Pirates star rookie Konnor Griffin made his MLB debut on April 3 this season. There was no shortage of hype for Griffin as he joined the Pirates, but from April 3 through April 23 the shortstop hit just .182 with no home runs. On April 24, however, Griffin turned 20 years old and everything changed.
Griffin hit his first MLB home run on his birthday on April 24. According to statmuse.com, Griffin is hitting .405 with two home runs from April 24 through May 3.
Sometimes, all a rookie needs is one big swing to find their rhythm. For Griffin, it seems as if his big swing on his birthday changed everything. He has looked like the player Pittsburgh knew he could be over the past 10 games.
Griffin entered the season as the top prospect in the sport. Pirates fans were disappointed when he did not make the big league ball club out of spring training. They did not have to wait too long for his promotion, though.
Overall, Griffin is now hitting .262/.325/.398 across 29 games played. Most of his production has come over the past week and a half. The Pirates are quietly emerging as a potential contender as well.
Pittsburgh holds a 19-16 record heading into their upcoming series against the Arizona Diamondbacks. The NL Central has out-performed expectations so the Pirates are currently in last place, but the team is playing well nonetheless. Pittsburgh could realistically compete for a National League Wild Card spot this year, especially with Paul Skenes leading the rotation and Konnor Griffin playing at a high level.
