Thompson recently appeared on Khloé Kardashian's podcast, "Khloé in Wonderland," where he discussed his decision to take a break from playing basketball this season.

“Honestly, it’s been great,” Thompson said, via MassLives Souichi Terada. “What I always tell people, it feels like I’m a rookie again. For me, at some point, father time wins. So I think you have to figure out how you’re going to pivot. I think the toughest thing for anyone, but just for athletes, is figuring out what’s next. I think for athletes, easiest transition is going into sports broadcasting because I think it’s a way that you can still stay part of the game and just talk about what you love.”

It seemed like Thompson was hinting he was retiring from the NBA, but he quickly cleared things up on Friday with a post stating he wasn’t.

"Fake News," Thompson wrote on X under a post that said he has retired from basketball.

Thompson has played 14 seasons in the NBA, including 11 with the Cleveland Cavaliers . He also played for the Celtics, Kings, Bulls and Pacers during his time in the league.

The 6-foot-9 center didn't play this season and only appeared in 40 games with the Cavs during the 2024-25 season. While it looks like his NBA career might be coming to an end, he hasn't officially announced it yet, leaving the door open for a possible return.
