Minnesota Vikings quarterback JJ McCarthy became the center of controversy recently due to some of his comments made about the quarterback room and playing alongside Kyler Murray . With numerous individuals calling out McCarthy’s comments, a former quarterback of the Dallas Cowboys shares his two cents on the situation.
Ben DiNucci , who played for the Cowboys for three games in the 2020 season and has since turned into an NFL analyst, claimed that McCarthy’s approach to the quarterback room in Minnesota is not how professionals go about it . DiNucci claims McCarthy’s attitude is not something that works at the professional level, and that there are too many eyes paying attention to have this type of mentality.
“JJ, this is the NFL, brother,” said DiNucci. “This type of attitude doesn’t fly at the QB position. You have too many people watching how you talk/act.”
JJ McCarthy’s comments about Kyler Murray made him appear indifferent to Murray when he was asked about his relationship with his new teammate. The 23-year-old quarterback compared the situation to two high school quarterbacks competing with one another for the starting job. McCarthy was maybe just being honest, but his comments are not sitting well with Ben DiNucci or many others on social media.
“It’s just like two guys in a classroom. He sits on one side, I sit on the other side, and it’s the coach’s responsibility to teach us and coach us,” said McCarthy when asked about his relationship with Murray… “You know, it’s just like the same feeling when you’re in high school, and there’s another person on the other side of the room. That’s just kind of how it is. So, I wouldn’t say there’s any awkwardness [in the relationship].”
McCarthy was a first-round pick in the 2024 NFL Draft by the Vikings, but didn’t play his rookie season due to a knee injury he suffered during the preseason that year. He stepped in as the starting quarterback last season, replacing Sam Darnold , and didn’t have the most successful year, finishing with 1,632 passing yards, 181 rushing yards, 15 total touchdowns, and 12 interceptions while completing 57.6% of his pass attempts.
Meanwhile, Kyler Murray joins the Vikings after the worst season of his career so far with the Arizona Cardinals . Arizona replaced Murray as the starter after he suffered a concussion in the middle of the season, and he never returned to the field.
