Jayden Daniels will have a former Patriots draft pick in his quarterback room next season.
Danny Etling has been hired as an assistant quarterbacks coach in Washington , according to Matt Zenitz of CBS Sports. One of Bill Belichick’s seventh round picks in the 2018 NFL Draft, Etling was a preseason star who spent that regular season and postseason run on the practice squad.
The following summer, Belichick opted to turn Etling into a wide receiver, but he was cut in August and claimed by the Falcons. From there, he bounced around quite a bit, with stops in Seattle , Minnesota , Denver , Green Bay, Jacksonville , and British Columbia of the CFL. He played with the Michigan Panthers of the USFL in 2024 and 2025, going 5-2 as a starter, before pivoting to coaching.
With the Commanders, Etling will be tasked with mentoring one of Drake Maye ’s peers, as Daniels was selected one pick before the Patriots quarterback in the 2024 NFL Draft.
Etling still holds the Patriots franchise record for the longest quarterback run in a preseason game, an 86-yard touchdown scamper against the Giants in the final exhibition game of 2018.
