The Houston Astros are going through a rough start to the season at 9-15. Meanwhile, Yordan Alvarez is not fully on board with being the designated hitter as opposed to left field.
At the same time, the Astros have some decisions to make. According to former player Trevor Plouffe , Houston should consider sending Alvarez away, per Talkin’ Baseball. At first, he was kidding, before thinking it through much more thoroughly.
“I’m just joking about him being traded, but I also started to really think about it, too,” he said. “He’s got two years after this at 26 million per year. He would fetch some prospects or whatever you wanted. This guy is essentially a top. He’s a top-three hitter in all of baseball.”
“I don’t think they have a ton on the way. They are an older team on the field right now. Would that happen? They don’t care about keeping people, they never have.”
Currently, Alvarez is batting .326 with 28 hits, 10 home runs, and 21 RBIs. He has been with Houston since 2019. In 2019, he was named the American League Rookie of the Year.
Along the way, Alavrez has become a three-time All-Star (2022, 2023, and 2024). In 2022, he helped lead Houston to a World Series title and won the Silver Slugger Award. However, he has had to battle injuries in the past .
Currently, the Astros are dealing with a lack of depth in their pitching rotation due to injuries. Plus, their farm system is in shambles.
All three combined give reason to trade Alvarez to make them more financially flexible, as well as allowing Alvarez to go elsewhere and play defense.
On the flip side, Alvarez is an MVP-caliber player, and Houston would likely get low-level prospects in return. Also, his contract runs through 2028 and includes a limited no-trade clause.
