The 202 Major League Baseball season has been going on for just under one month and yet a former Boston Red Sox top prospect is surprisingly still looking for his next home.
There was a time when flamethrower Michael Kopech was tearing it up down in the Red Sox's farm system. There was a time when he actually hit 105 miles per hour on the radar gun down in Boston's system. Kopech was a first-round pick by the Red Sox back in 2014. He made it up to High-A in the Red Sox's system before he was one of the centerpieces in the Red Sox's deal to acquire Chris Sale from the Chicago White Sox .
Kopech eventually made his big league debut as a member of the White Sox in 2018 and has appeared in 184 total big league games since across six seasons with Chicago and the Los Angeles Dodgers . He has transitioned from the starting rotation to the bullpen.
The flamethrower had a 2.45 ERA in 14 total appearances last year for the Dodgers across 11 innings pitched. Now, he's available in free agency at just 29 years old. There are a few guys available right now in free agency with more upside than Kopech. Another name that would fit this description would be Lucas Giolito , who thrived with the Red Sox in 2025.
At some point, Kopech should get an opportunity. It doesn't make much sense that he's available, frankly.
