Jacob Ramsey should have been shown a straight red card during a frustrating night for Newcastle United against Everton.
That is according to former PGMOL chief and ex-FIFA referee, Keith Hackett, who exclusively told Football Insiderthat the Newcastle substitute's late challenge was "unacceptable".
Emotions were riding high at St James' Park on Monday, 2 November, with the home fans voicing their anger and disappointment throughout the game.
Thierno Barry scored the only goal on the night, converting from close range after Lukas Hornicek allowed Tyrique George's effort to squirm under him.
Then, really rubbing salt into the wounds, Ramsey was shown two bookings in very quick succession in added time, leading to a sending-off.
After bringing down a counter-attacking Hayden Hackney, he lunged into a challenge on Harrison Armstrong, catching his opponent very high.
Jacob Ramsey at heart of 'unacceptable' controversy
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, Hackett has argued that Ramsey should have been shown a straight red card instead of a second caution.
This is an unacceptable challenge, clearly the result of the offender's frustration. The challenge met the criteria for serious foul play and should have resulted in a red card," he said.
"The law states that serious foul play is a tackle or challenge that endangers the safety of an opponent or uses excessive force or brutality must be sanctioned as serious foul play.
"Any player who lunges at an opponent in challenging for the ball from the front, from the side or from behind using one or both legs, with excessive force or endangers the safety of an opponent is guilty."
Depending on the severity of a red card, the 25-year-old may have been forced to miss three games. Instead, he'll only miss one game.
That being said, two yellow cards also mean that appealling the decision is not an option for the Magpies.

There was absolutely no doubt that Ramsey's challenge on Armstrong was worthy of a red card, whether that be a second yellow or a straight red.
Clearly, Lewis Hall didn't see it that way, and he angered the entire Everton fanbase when attempting to pick an injured Armstrong up off the floor.
Despite his actions, the left-back avoided any type of repercussion from John Brooks, who then cautioned Brennan Johnson and Fabian Schar.
Emotions bubbled over, and the referee didn't completely cover himself in glory. When the sides meet next, Hall is likely to be one targeted by the Everton fans.
