There is no shortage of questions surrounding the Browns as the start of training camp draws closer. Such is the story of a team coming off 3-14 and 5-12 seasons with a new head coach.
Rookies report to training camp in Berea on July 23. Veterans report July 28.
Todd Monken is a first-time NFL head coach at age 60. Monken thought he would have a starting quarterback named by now, but that is not the case because neither Deshaun Watson nor Shedeur Sanders distinguished himself during spring practices and the mandatory minicamp last month.
"I'd love to have it now. We just don't," Monken said the last time he met with reporters. "It would feel different if I didn't feel like their progression hadn't gotten to this point where I think they both can start and play winning football. I'm convinced of it. And I'd say it if I didn't.
"I can't decide now because I think both have earned the opportunity to continue to compete once we put the pads on. We'll start off all camp just like we've been doing. We'll alternate those guys."
A quarterback competition is a never-ending story in Cleveland . For now, let's focus on the offensive line.
Not only is the head coach new. Unless Dawand Jones beats out rookie first-round draft pick Spencer Fano at left tackle, all five starters on the offensive line will be new. That is unprecedented for the Browns. For that matter, the Browns are on their third offensive line coach in three years. It would be inaccurate to label George Warhop new because he coached the Browns' offensive line from 2009-13.
"There's still a lot to see – quarterbacks and the O-line, especially once we put the pads on," Monken said.
Zion Johnson , signed in free agency after four years with the Chargers, quickly moved in as the starting left guard. General Manager Andrew Berry traded a 2026 fifth-round draft pick to the Texans for Tytus Howard . Howard will start at right tackle.
The Browns invested the ninth pick in the draft on Fano. It would be a surprise if he doesn't beat out Jones, but Warhop said the fourth-year player from Ohio State, who has 20 starts in 24 games played, could be more than a backup.
"I'm not putting a swing tackle on Dawand," Warhop said. "Dawand's going to come in and compete. We're not conceding anything. And he's not conceding.
"He had a really good spring. I think training camp's going to be even better for him. I really enjoy coaching him. I think he can be a really good player in this league. So swing tackle, I don't know. I'm going to see if he can start for us in some capacity before I say he's a swing tackle."
Elgton Jenkins played the previous seven seasons with the Packers , primarily at guard. He started nine games at center in 2025 for Green Bay before a leg injury cut his season short.
Jenkins has the inside track to beat out rookie Parker Brailsford at center, but if Brailsford wows the coaches in training camp, Jenkins could move to right guard. Teven Jenkins and KT Leveston are also in the mix to start at right guard.
Leveston got playing time at right guard in minicamp. He played in 16 games with the Browns last year and started seven at tackle. Leveston jumped out when Monken watched film of the 2025 Browns before the 2026 offseason program began in April.
"We're just trying to move guys around a little bit to see where we can find the best five," Monken said. "We do like his power and his toughness, from what we've seen from last year. Obviously, we don't see it here (before practicing in pads).
"Last year when he got a chance to play, you could see that running off the football, his aggressiveness, finishing plays, you love that about him. Those kinds of guys you're always trying to find a spot for."
Jenkins was a backup right guard most of last season until Wyatt Teller fell out of favor with the coaches.
