The Atlanta Falcons have produced one of the NFL's most stunning quarterback contrasts this season. Cooper Rush fans aren't going to be happy, though. His numbers under center look increasingly difficult to defend. Through the first two weeks , Atlanta averaged just 8.0 points and 262 total yards per game while committing seven turnovers. Since Michael Penix Jr took over in Week 3, those figures have exploded.
Penix has helped Atlanta average an NFL-best 40.0 points and 459 yards across victories over the Green Bay Packers and New Orleans Saints. He has also had only one turnover. The 32-point scoring difference and nearly 200-yard jump in production are remarkable. That's considering the Falcons are operating within the same Kevin Stefanski system and largely the same supporting cast.

Rush struggled to consistently move the offense or protect the football in his brief stint . That limitied the impact of weapons such as Drake London and Bijan Robinson. Penix, meanwhile, has provided greater pocket mobility and a willingness to attack intermediate windows. That has opened opportunities across Atlanta's offense. It has also allowed its explosive skill-position talent to flourish.
Rush's NFL career has otherwise been defined by reliability. An undrafted free agent from Central Michigan in 2017, he spent much of his career with the Dallas Cowboys, becoming a trusted backup to Dak Prescott. His 2021 win over Minnesota and 4–1 starting stretch in 2022 demonstrated his ability to keep an offense functional when called upon.

That said, Atlanta's 2026 numbers tell a harsher story. Rush's limitations were magnified by the immediate impact of Penix. That makes Rush's two-game run look among the league's least productive quarterback stretches. For the Falcons, the contrast may have saved their season and established who should remain in control.
