The entire world had tuned in to see Argentina make a meal out of Cape Verde , bringing an end to a historic run by the minnow nation with a population of just around half a million. However, what followed was a captivating display of determination and grit that forced the Argentines to produce a 3-2 win after conceding two dramatic equalizers.
And well, a range of famous fans from across sports were left to laud Cape Verde .
"YOU PUT YOURSELVES ON THE WORLD MAP, EARNED INTERNATIONAL RESPECT," Skip Bayless wrote on X in all caps , with Marc Stein branding Cape Verde as one of the reasons why the World Cup has been 'great.'
"Have to say: 48-team World Cup has proven to be pretty damn great and Cape Verde are a big reason why," he wrote.
WWE commentator Stu Bennet also posted a lengthy tribute , claiming that he might be considering making Cape Verde his second home.
"From "Where the f*** is Cape Verde?" to "Cape Verde are my second team and I'm going to retire there" in the space of 3 weeks. What a team. So good."
Robert Griggin III, Chad Johnson and Patrick Bet-David all had similar responses , clearly blown away with what the No. 64 ranked nation had produced.
Argentina appeared to be sticking to the script when Lionel Messi brought down a beautiful Lisandro Martinez pass to open the scoring in the 29th minute, his 20th World Cup goal and his seventh for this tournament. However, Deroy Duarte produced a 53rd minute equalizer before Martinez produced a 92nd minute goal, getting on the scoresheet after assisting the first.
The drama appeared to have concluded. However, Cape Verde then saw left back Sidny Lopes Cabral produce a 103rd minute goal, before Argentina responded in the 111th minute goal to ensure qualification to the Round of 16 and just narrowly avoiding a penalty shootout.
There is little doubt that Cape Verde have written their name in football history. They initially qualified as the 2nd placed team from a group that also included Spain , Uruguay and Saudi Arabia , with goalkeeper Vozinha essentially writing himself into football folklore.
Against Argentina, he was once again the main man as Messi and co. produced a fluid attacking display that saw them create chance after chance. However, Cape Verde not only held on, they also found two equalizers and kept the match alive until the very end, earning the plaudits they will continue to get for a long time.
