There are certain moments in sports that transcend the game itself, moments where an entire nation rallies behind one of its own and collectively says, "This kid is ours." For the Cayman Islands, that moment arrived when 18-year-old Jaxon Cover touched down at Owen Roberts International Airport on Saturday, July 25, and was met by a crowd that made it clear just how much his achievement means to an entire country.
Government officials, family members, friends, and enthusiastic supporters packed the airport to greet Cover following his historic selection as the first Caymanian ever drafted into the National Hockey League. The Ottawa Senators picked him 32nd overall, the final selection of the first round of the 2026 NHL Draft back on June 26, and the island has been buzzing ever since.
Cover was visibly moved by the reception, telling reporters that seeing the turnout meant the world to him. He emphasized his hope that his journey inspires young people across the Cayman Islands to dream big and pursue whatever path excites them, no matter how unconventional it might seem.
"It feels great. Just having that welcome was amazing and seeing how much people are here supporting me is great," Cover said. "It feels great to be back home to spend time with family and friends, and just enjoy the sun."
His father, Patrick Cover, described the entire experience since draft night as "action-packed and very emotional." He recalled the nerve-wracking wait as the first round ticked along, hoping his son's name would be called. When it finally was, the family went from nervousness to pure elation. Patrick admitted he had to take a step back and ask himself, "Is this really happening?" But he was also quick to note that the real work is only beginning. "It's no longer just fun. Now it's a job," he said.
What makes Cover's story so remarkable is the path he took to get here. He grew up playing inline hockey on the only rink in the Cayman Islands, developing the fluid skating style and quick hands that are hallmarks of the inline game. At 12, his family relocated to Canada, where he transitioned to ice hockey. His skills translated quickly, and he was selected by the London Knights in the fourth round of the 2024 Ontario Hockey League draft. Last season, he finished third on the Knights with 52 points in 67 games, including 20 goals and 32 assists.
His rise has sent shockwaves through the inline hockey community. Former NHL forward and three-time Stanley Cup champion Patrick Maroon , who himself played on the U.S. Men's National Inline Hockey Team, said he watched Cover's growth from roller hockey in the Caymans all the way to the OHL and marveled at how quickly everything came together. "The way he came up, and the way he started is just remarkable," Maroon said.
Blake Bolden, a scout and hockey development specialist with the Los Angeles Kings who also plays inline, noted that social media has been flooded with old clips of Cover playing in inline tournaments. "The crossover is great for the game," she said. The ripple effects have been felt far beyond North America as well. Owen Haiek, captain of Argentina's men's ice hockey team, said Cover's journey gives hope to inline players across Latin America, the Caribbean, and Africa, regions where ice rinks are scarce or nonexistent.
Since the draft, Cover has stayed busy. He spent four or five days training with the Senators, skating alongside their professional players, an experience he called "amazing." Beyond that, he has been hitting the gym with the goal of getting bigger and stronger ahead of the upcoming season, while still making time to be a regular teenager hanging out with friends over the summer.
For the Cayman Islands, Cover is more than just a hockey prospect. He is proof that geography does not have to define your ceiling. As Scott Vargas, president of the Puerto Rico Ice Hockey Association, put it: "What Jaxon did shows there's a path." And if the scene at Owen Roberts International Airport is any indication, an entire nation will be watching every step of his journey from here.
