PSV Eindhoven secured a crucial 1-0 victory over FC Porto at the Estádio do Dragão, earning their first Champions League win of the campaign thanks to Guus Til's second-half goal.

Peter Bosz's side arrived in Portugal under pressure after a disappointing defeat to ADO Den Haag and a difficult start to their European campaign. They responded with a determined performance, creating the better opportunities before the break and showing resilience when Porto threatened to equalise late on.

The result offered PSV a much-needed boost, but the performance also highlighted areas that will need attention as the competition progresses.

Here are three things we learned from PSV's victory over Porto.

1. PSV's Attacking Intent Was Rewarded, but Finishing Remains a Concern

Bosz set his side up in a 4-3-3 formation, with Ivan Perisic and Esmir Bajraktarevic supporting Til in attack. PSV started brightly and controlled much of the first half, moving the ball well and repeatedly finding space in Porto's defensive third.

The visitors created several promising openings, but their lack of composure threatened to undermine their efforts. Mauro Junior fired wide on two occasions, Perisic headed over from a good position, and Filip Kostic struck the outside of the post after pressing Victor Froholdt into a mistake.

PSV had enough opportunities to take the lead before half-time, yet they went into the break at 0-0.

Their persistence eventually paid off after the restart. Bajraktarevic struck the woodwork with a powerful volley. Soon afterwards Sven Mijnans' subsequent effort found its way across goal, allowing Til to tap into an unguarded net.

It was a decisive moment for a side that had struggled to convert chances in Europe. PSV had previously been criticised for their poor finishing, and the win did not erase those concerns. However, their ability to keep creating opportunities and eventually find a breakthrough was an encouraging sign.

2. Guus Til Delivered When PSV Needed Him Most

Til's goal proved the difference in a match where both teams had opportunities to score. His close-range finish was straightforward, but his positioning ensured PSV finally capitalised on their attacking pressure.

The goal was particularly valuable given the circumstances surrounding the team. PSV had lost to ADO Den Haag over the weekend, while their Champions League campaign had begun with a draw against Shakhtar Donetsk and a defeat to RB Leipzig.

Til's contribution offered Bosz a timely reminder of the importance of having players who can make the difference in decisive moments.

Mijnans also played a part in the breakthrough, providing the attacking involvement that led to Til's finish. After being sent off against ADO, the forward had an opportunity to respond on the European stage.

PSV will need more contributions like this if they are to turn their Champions League campaign around. Creating chances is important, but converting them into goals and points will ultimately determine how far they progress.

3. PSV's Defensive Resilience Was Just as Important as the Goal

While PSV deserved credit for their first-half control, Porto made the visitors work hard to protect their advantage.

The hosts increased the pressure after the interval and created several clear opportunities to equalise. Matej Kovar produced an important close-range save to deny Hwang, while Lutsharel Geertruida cleared Victor Froholdt's rebound off the line.

Porto also squandered another promising opening when Pablo Rosario failed to convert after being played through, with Sergino Dest recovering to make a vital intervention. The hosts continued to threaten during the closing stages, but PSV stood firm.

Kovar's goalkeeping and the defensive work of Geertruida and Dest proved crucial in preserving the clean sheet. Their contributions ensured PSV's earlier attacking work was not undone by a late lapse in concentration.

The defensive performance was not without its difficult moments, but PSV showed the determination required to see out a narrow European victory.

For Bosz , that resilience will be particularly welcome after a frustrating domestic result. PSV now have a platform to build on, although maintaining their defensive organisation while improving their finishing remains essential.

Verdict: A Vital Result for Bosz and PSV

PSV's victory in Porto was built on attacking ambition, Til's decisive finish and a collective effort to withstand late pressure.

There is still work to do, particularly in front of goal, but three points away from home provide a valuable boost to a European campaign that had threatened to drift off course.

The challenge now is to carry that confidence into their next fixtures, starting with Feyenoord, and show that this performance can become a turning point rather than an isolated result.
