FIFA have updated their stadium rules ahead of the 2026 World Cup, with fans no longer allowed to bring water bottles into venues in North America.
Previous versions of FIFA's Stadium Code of Conduct had permitted empty, transparent, reusable plastic bottles up to one litre in size.

Earlier wording in FIFA's Stadium Code of Conduct included specific guidance on reusable bottles.
It stated: "For the avoidance of doubt, empty, transparent, reusable plastic bottles, up to (1 liter in) capacity, may be brought into the Stadium."
That wording is no longer in place, with FIFA changing the rule before the tournament.
Fans will now need to check the latest stadium guidance before heading to matches.

The policy shift affects the practical side of attending games rather than anything on the pitch.
Rules around what can be brought into stadiums are important for fans planning travel, arrival times, and time spent around venues.
The tournament will take place across North America during the summer period, which is why hydration and stadium access rules are likely to receive attention.
There is no confirmed link in the current source base between the rule change and heat concerns. The verified detail is that the water bottle policy has been updated.

Clear stadium information important for travelling fans
The new rule puts focus on clear communication before supporters arrive at World Cup venues.
Supporters who had seen the earlier wording may now need to adjust what they bring on matchdays.
It is not yet clear from the current source base what water options will be available inside stadiums.
For now, the confirmed detail is limited to the change itself. FIFA's previous rule allowed a specific type of reusable bottle, and the latest reported position is that fans will no longer be allowed to bring water bottles into venues in North America.
