- FISH ON FRIDAY: Beckett's Marlins Masterpiece

Most great artists spend a lifetime searching for their masterpiece, sometimes never finding it, but 23 years ago, Miami Marlins' pitcher Josh Beckett needed just nine innings to ink out his immortal expression.
On a cool Fall night in the Bronx, with the weight of a World Series resting on his right arm, the young ace took the mound for the then-'Florida' Marlins against the New York Yankees and began painting a picture that would never be forgotten. There were no brushes in his hands, no canvas before him. Just a baseball and a lineup of Bronx Bombers stacked with October legends.

Pitch followed pitch, brushstroke after brushstroke, as the 23-year-old wunderkind delivered a timeless portrait of hardball history in the Sunshine State. Seemingly painted into a corner, Beckett found a way to color within the lines and controlled the strike zone all night
On October 25, 2003, the 10-year-old Marlins would topple the game's most historic franchise thanks largely to the young man they selected out of high school with the second overall pick in the 1999 Major League Baseball Draft. It was the Fish's second Series title, and they haven't come close to lifting the Commissioner's Trophy in the 23 years since.
A Marlins Masterpiece in the Bronx
Every legendary performance requires a fitting stage, and for Beckett, few venues could compare to the grand scale of Yankee Stadium, where a baseball dynasty blocked the Marlins' path to glory. Entering the series, New York boasted 101 regular-season wins, a rich championship heritage, and a payroll of $164 million. On the other hand, the Marlins were a young National League Wild Card squad with modest resources and low expectations.

Yet it was fate, not financial advantages, that would dictate the outcome once Game 6 started and the fastballs began flying.
"We knew we were good," Beckett recalled years later. "We just weren't playing good at the time. We obviously took off."
Marlins manager Jack McKeon made a daring call, starting Beckett on just three days' rest. The young right-hander embraced the moment, delivering a complete-game shutout; Beckett surrendered just five hits and zero walks while striking out nine batters over nine brilliant innings and 107 pitches.
"When Beckett was pitching that sixth game of the World Series, he wasn't coming out until they tied the game," McKeon remembered in a 2014 interview. "If they tied the game, he might have been coming out of there. But I was going with my horse."

After the final punchout of Jorge Posada, Beckett thrust his arms in the air in victory as his teammates rushed the field.
More than two decades later, that October night remains one of the most enduring images in Marlins history. Beckett spent only five seasons with the franchise, but his legacy cannot be measured by longevity alone. His name belongs alongside the defining figures of Florida's two championship teams, and his induction into the Marlins Hall of Fame in 2026 further cemented that place.
Artists are remembered for the work they leave behind. On that October night in the Bronx, Josh Beckett gave Miami a masterpiece... one painted in fastballs, curves, and (most of all) composure, with a World Series trophy as the final signature.
