AMES, Iowa — Oklahoma State scored 49 points, produced 533 yards of offense and took the lead with 53 seconds remaining Saturday night.
It still wasn't enough. Iowa State's 51–49 victory exposed several issues for the Cowboys , who dropped to 5–3 overall and 3–2 in Big 12 play.

Here are five takeaways from Oklahoma State's third consecutive loss in Ames.
1. Special teams finally had an off night
Special teams had been one of Oklahoma State's most reliable units throughout the season, but Saturday was a different story.
Sam Keltner entered the game having made all 18 of his field-goal attempts before missing a 45-yarder in the first quarter. Bobby Deal Jr. also muffed a punt in the second quarter, giving Iowa State possession deep in Oklahoma State territory. The mistakes were particularly costly in a game ultimately decided by two points.
Meanwhile, Iowa State kicker Kyle Konrardy made three field goals, including the 34-yard game-winner as time expired.

2. Iowa State's biggest weapons delivered anyway
Oklahoma State knew Aiden Flora and Jaylen Raynor would be central to Iowa State's offensive game plan. Containing them proved much more difficult.
Flora rushed for 221 yards and two touchdowns on 29 carries, including a 75-yard scoring run in the fourth quarter immediately after Oklahoma State had cut the deficit to three points. Raynor added 309 passing yards, three passing touchdowns and 48 rushing yards with another score.
The two consistently created problems for Oklahoma State's defense, whether through designed runs, quarterback scrambles or explosive passes. The Cowboys entered the matchup understanding the threat both players presented but struggled to limit their production.

3. Explosive passing plays continue to hurt the secondary
Oklahoma State's secondary had difficulty containing Iowa State's passing attack. Raynor averaged more than 17 yards per completion, while Jamal Polite finished with six catches for 171 yards and a touchdown.
Cameron Pettaway added a 40-yard touchdown reception that extended the Cyclones' lead to 38–28 late in the third quarter. Polite also caught a 33-yard pass on Iowa State's final possession, immediately moving the Cyclones into Oklahoma State territory.
The Cowboys are feeling the absence of defensive back Mose Phillips, whose presence and experience would be valuable against explosive passing attacks. Even with LaDainian Fields recording another interception, Oklahoma State couldn't consistently prevent chunk plays through the air.

4. The Cowboys couldn't carry their second-half momentum into Ames
Oklahoma State entered Saturday after a dominant second-half performance against Colorado, scoring 34 unanswered points to turn a close game into a 57–24 victory.
That momentum didn't carry over against Iowa State. Trailing 24–21 at halftime, the Cowboys opened the third quarter with a possession that stalled following a false-start penalty and an unsuccessful third-and-long conversion. Iowa State eventually extended its advantage to 38–28 before the quarter ended.
Oklahoma State did rally in the fourth quarter, but the Cowboys spent much of the second half trying to overcome mistakes and defensive breakdowns rather than controlling the game.

Game management also became a factor late. The Cowboys scored the go-ahead touchdown with 53 seconds remaining, leaving Iowa State an opportunity to respond. That was enough time for the Cyclones to reach field-goal range and win.
5. Another comeback falls short because of costly mistakes
Oklahoma State deserves credit for its resilience. Drew Mestemaker threw for 323 yards and five touchdowns, Caleb Hawkins rushed for 194 yards and two scores, and the Cowboys rallied from a 10-point fourth-quarter deficit.
But another comeback ultimately ended in disappointment. Mestemaker's interception with 4:35 remaining set up an Iowa State field goal, forcing Oklahoma State to mount one final touchdown drive.

The Cowboys answered when Mestemaker found Wyatt Young for a 7-yard score with 53 seconds left, taking a 49–48 lead. However, Young received an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty following the touchdown, costing Oklahoma State 15 yards on the ensuing kickoff.
Iowa State started at its own 37-yard line and needed less than a minute to set up Konrardy's game-winning kick. The penalty wasn't the only reason Oklahoma State lost, but it reflected a broader problem.
For all the Cowboys' offensive success, missed opportunities, defensive lapses and a lack of discipline prevented them from closing out a game they had fought hard to win.
Oklahoma State remains one victory away from bowl eligibility, but Saturday showed that producing points alone won't be enough to reach its larger goals.
