No. 18 Oklahoma State extended its winning streak to four games Saturday, defeating UCF 42-28 at Boone Pickens Stadium to improve to 4-1 overall and 2-0 in Big 12 play.

The Cowboys overcame a 21-21 halftime tie with a strong second-half performance, highlighted by another game-changing defensive play, a turnover-free outing from quarterback Drew Mestemaker and a much-improved effort against the run.

While Eric Morris' team continues to build momentum, Saturday's victory also revealed areas that need attention before Oklahoma State travels to Houston.

Here are five takeaways from the Cowboys' first-ever victory over UCF.

1. Second-Half Adjustments and Another Momentum-Changing Play Made the Difference

For the second consecutive game, Oklahoma State found a way to create a defining momentum swing. After a back-and-forth first half, the Cowboys outscored UCF 21-7 after halftime, holding the Knights to just 30 rushing yards over the final two quarters.

But the biggest moment came in the fourth quarter. With Oklahoma State leading 27-21, UCF quarterback Keyone Jenkins lost the football while being tackled, and Evan Jackson recovered it before returning it 28 yards for a touchdown. Mestemaker added the two-point conversion, turning a six-point advantage into a 35-21 lead.

The defense followed with another stop, and Mestemaker connected with Wyatt Young for a five-yard touchdown to extend the lead to 42-21.

For the second straight week, the Cowboys showed an ability to respond to adversity and take control when the game was still within reach.

The question moving forward is whether Oklahoma State can establish that control earlier rather than needing a second-half turnaround.

2. Drew Mestemaker Delivers His Cleanest Performance Yet Behind Strong Pass Protection

Mestemaker continued his impressive stretch with another 300-yard passing performance, but Saturday's biggest development was his ability to protect the football.

The Cowboys' quarterback completed 19 of 28 passes for 304 yards and two touchdowns without an interception, while adding a rushing touchdown and a successful two-point conversion.

It marked his fourth consecutive 300-yard passing game and his first turnover-free performance of the season.

But Mestemaker wasn't doing it alone. Oklahoma State's offensive line allowed just one sack, providing a consistently clean pocket that gave its quarterback time to work through his progressions, identify open receivers and deliver accurate throws.

Mestemaker took advantage of that protection, making several NFL-caliber throws, including downfield completions and passes into tight windows.

Justin Bowick was his favorite target, finishing with six receptions for 98 yards and a touchdown. Miles Coleman added 69 receiving yards, while Young contributed 52 yards and a score.

The combination of improved decision-making, strong pass protection and Mestemaker's arm talent made Oklahoma State's passing attack difficult to contain.

If the Cowboys can continue protecting their quarterback while Mestemaker limits turnovers, the offense has the potential to become even more dangerous as Big 12 play continues.

3. Run Defense Answers the Challenge and Sets the Second-Half Tone

One week after allowing 335 rushing yards against West Virginia, Oklahoma State's defense faced another important test.

This time, the Cowboys delivered a much stronger performance. UCF finished with just 110 rushing yards, including only 30 after halftime.

That improvement helped Oklahoma State dictate the second half, forcing the Knights into more difficult offensive situations and creating opportunities for the defense to attack.

Ethan Wesloski led the Cowboys with 15 tackles, while Tate Romney added 12 tackles and half a sack. Quinton Hammonds contributed 11 tackles, and Isaiah Chisom finished with nine.

The defense also produced two takeaways, including Jackson's touchdown and Cameron Epps' interception on UCF's final possession.

The Cowboys still surrendered 265 passing yards, but their ability to limit the ground game was a significant step forward after the struggles in Morgantown.

Against a Big 12 schedule that will continue to test their defensive discipline, Saturday's improvement needs to become the standard.

4. Special Teams Deliver Another Clean Operation

Special teams rarely receive the same attention as offensive touchdowns or defensive takeaways, but Oklahoma State continues to benefit from reliable execution in the kicking game.

Sam Keltner converted both field-goal attempts Saturday, connecting from 40 and 29 yards.

Both kicks came in the second half, when every possession carried additional importance.

His 40-yarder broke the 21-21 halftime tie, while his 29-yarder extended the Cowboys' lead to 27-21 before Jackson's defensive touchdown.

Keltner is now 12-for-12 on field-goal attempts this season, giving Morris a dependable option when drives stall.

There were no missed field goals or extra points for the Cowboys, and the kicking operation avoided the costly errors that can swing close conference games.

With Oklahoma State continuing to play meaningful Big 12 matchups, that consistency could prove increasingly valuable.

5. Early Mistakes Remain a Concern Despite the Victory

As encouraging as the final score was, Oklahoma State made Saturday more difficult than it needed to be.

The Cowboys' opening possession ended with a Caleb Hawkins fumble, giving UCF favorable field position. The Knights immediately capitalized, scoring the game's first touchdown on a one-yard pass from Jenkins to Grayson Brousseau.

Oklahoma State eventually settled into an offensive rhythm, but the defense struggled to get off the field during portions of the first half.

UCF scored three touchdowns before halftime, including a three-yard touchdown pass to Tyren Hornes with just 16 seconds remaining in the second quarter. Instead of taking a lead into the locker room, the Cowboys were tied 21-21.

Oklahoma State deserves credit for making the necessary adjustments, but slow starts and early mistakes could become more costly against stronger conference opponents.

The Cowboys have shown they can finish games. Now they need to demonstrate they can consistently start them with the same level of execution.

Looking Ahead

Oklahoma State's fourth consecutive victory provided further evidence of the program's progress under Morris.

Mestemaker continues to produce at a high level, the defense showed it can make meaningful adjustments, and special teams remain a dependable part of the operation.

But the Cowboys also have room to improve, particularly when it comes to avoiding early mistakes and establishing control before halftime.

Oklahoma State will look to build on its 2-0 Big 12 start Saturday, October 17, when it visits Houston. Kickoff is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. CT on FOX.
