It was already shaping up to be an emotional evening for Marc-Andre Fleury . The former NHL goaltender was being honored at the QMJHL Hall of Fame induction ceremony in Quebec City on Wednesday night, and the memories were flowing freely. His billet family from Cape Breton was in the crowd. Old teammates were there to celebrate him. But nobody in the building was quite prepared for what happened when a video message from Sidney Crosby started playing on the screen.
Fleury, who spent years alongside Crosby as a Pittsburgh Penguin and won three Stanley Cups with him, was visibly moved to tears by the heartfelt tribute from his longtime teammate. The moment quickly went viral on social media, and honestly, it's not hard to see why. These two shared a locker room through some of the most memorable stretches in modern hockey history, and that kind of bond clearly doesn't fade just because the skates come off.
Fleury was one of five inductees honored at the ceremony, but his speech stood out for its raw vulnerability. He spoke lovingly about his time in Nova Scotia, where he played for the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles after being drafted by the team in 2000. He spent four seasons there, earning recognition as the QMJHL's Defensive Player of the Year and Top Prospect before Pittsburgh selected him first overall in the 2003 NHL Draft.
A big part of his speech was dedicated to the Hawkins family, who served as his billet family during his junior hockey days. Fleury credited them with letting him "just be a kid" and even shared a funny story about backing into their garage door after a burger run. He recalled being terrified of their reaction, only for Bob Hawkins to ask if the burgers were okay, just to put the young goalie at ease. When Fleury turned to address the family directly, he choked back tears and told them he would always feel indebted for the way they welcomed him.
But the real waterworks came when Crosby's video message played. Seeing his former captain and close friend take the time to honor him from afar clearly hit Fleury in a place he wasn't expecting. The two men built something special together in Pittsburgh, and that connection was on full display for everyone in the room to witness.
It's easy to forget just how decorated Fleury's career truly is when you're caught up in the emotional moments. The man played over 1,000 NHL games across stints with the Penguins, Vegas Golden Knights , Chicago Blackhawks , and Minnesota Wild . He captured three Stanley Cup titles, won the Vezina Trophy as the league's top goaltender, and took home the William M. Jennings Trophy as well.
On the international stage, Fleury was equally impressive. He earned two silver medals at the IIHF Junior World Championship and was named both Top Goaltender and tournament MVP in 2003. He added an Olympic gold medal to his collection at the 2010 Vancouver Games.
Back in Cape Breton, his legacy remains deeply felt. His number 29 was retired by the franchise in 2008, and this past summer, Fleury brought his children to the rink where it all started so they could see their dad's number hanging in the rafters for the first time. Former teammate Dominic Noel, who played alongside Fleury for two seasons in Cape Breton, summed it up perfectly when he said that what you see from Fleury on TV is exactly what you get in person: a genuinely kind and thoughtful person.
That authenticity is exactly what made Wednesday night so powerful. From the garage door story to the tears prompted by Crosby's words, Fleury reminded everyone that behind the Hall of Fame resume is a guy who never lost sight of the people who helped him along the way.
