- Floor and Ceiling for San Antonio Spurs Rookie Revealed
(USA TODAY Network via Reuters Connect)
If it weren't for injuries robbing him of a college career, Jayden Quaintance was expected to be a lottery pick in the 2026 NBA Draft. Instead, he fell to 20th, where the San Antonio Spurs scooped him up.
Quaintance showed flashes in college, averaging 9.4 points in his freshman season at Arizona State before transferring to Kentucky, where injuries caught up to him.

When healthy, Quaintance is already one of the best athletes in the NBA. He makes the most of his 6-9 frame, boasts explosive athleticism, and can hold up to physicality. Right now, most of his instincts shine on the defensive end, although the Spurs are hoping he can be a long-term frontcourt partner for Victor Wembanyama .

Pros and Cons of Spurs Rookie Jayden Quaintance
The pros surrounding Quaintance are all rooted in potential . He should be a great defender. He should be an excellent athlete. He should be a fantastic rim-runner.

All of that hinges on him getting healthy. It seems that once-career-altering injuries are falling by the wayside, but torn ACLs and meniscus tears are still no joke. Quaintance might not even play at all in his rookie season.
The Spurs' plans for him, though, go far beyond just his rookie season.
"Quaintance is an athletic and versatile big with sky-high defensive potential as his length and mobility let him protect the rim and switch onto smaller players," wrote Sports Illustrated's Arya Chawla. "With Quaintance as Wembanyama's backup once healthy, San Antonio will be able to maintain the rim protection and versatile pick-and-roll coverage that it relies on in its best lineups. However, his offense remains a work in progress as he was not able to establish his scoring from any level of the court in college, including a subpar mark of 45.2 percent from the free-throw line."
If Quaintance exceeds expectations, he should be an excellent two-way power forward who can both back up and play alongside Wemby. If he doesn't pan out, well, look at Jeremy Sochan 's career.

Despite spending two seasons in college, Quaintance is one of the youngest and most raw players in the league. He has a long way to go before he's a viable role player. Luckily, there's no rush.
