Porter Martone has been nothing short of a revelation for the Philadelphia Flyers , playing at above a point-per-game pace in his first nine NHL regular season games and continuing to make an impact in the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

The 2025 sixth overall pick has recorded two goals and three points over four postseason contests, and the Flyers have a 3-1 lead in the Battle of Pennsylvania against the Pittsburgh Penguins in Round 1. The rookie has been a key reason for the team’s success, and he admits he’s already learning lessons in the show .

“I learned how to be on that fine line. I don’t want to be in the penalty box all game, because I think I’m more valuable on the ice,” Martone told ESPN’s Greg Wyshynski ahead of Game 5. “You’ve got to play with that emotion but you can’t go over that line. It’s got to be at the proper times. You just have to manage your emotions.”

“I made the jump to the NHL because I thought I was ready. I thought it was my time,” he continued. “If I didn’t, then I would have stayed at Michigan State for another year.”

Martone and the Flyers have an opportunity to advance to the second round — where the Carolina Hurricanes are waiting — if they can find a victory at PPG Paints Arena on Monday night. Philly has already won both games in Pittsburgh in the series.

Through just 13 games in the big leagues, Martone has endeared himself not only to the City of Brotherly Love with his fearless play, but also to his head coach.

“Love the kid,” Rick Tocchet said. “He’s just a hockey player. He loves the game. He’s not afraid to say something either and I like that.”

Tocchet’s group is one of the youngest rosters in the NHL postseason, and the youth revolution is coming in real time. Philly looks like a threat this spring, and Martone is quickly becoming an X-factor for the club.

It’ll be interesting to see if the Flyers can silence Sidney Crosby and the Penguins and advance past the first round for the first time since 2020.
