- Former AL MVP Bashes Detroit Tigers Organization for Handling of Tarik Skubal Situation
The Detroit Tigers' contract standoff with ace Tarik Skubal just went from tense to explosive. After news broke that Skubal filed for a record-setting $32 million in arbitration while the team countered at $19 million, a former New York Yankees star jumped into the debate, and didn't mince words.
Josh Donaldson , the 2015 AL MVP and three-time All-Star, took to social media and absolutely unloaded on Detroit, calling the franchise a "trash organization" for how it has handled Skubal's case.
What Josh Donaldson Actually Said
Donaldson, who spent time with the Yankees late in his career and retired in 2023, posted the following on X (formerly Twitter) :

"A little behind but just saw the arbitration news on Skubal. I mean the Detroit Tigers fumble this big time. Skubal wants 32 mill Detroit offers 19 mill. Trash organization."
That's about as blunt as it gets.
Donaldson never played for Detroit, but he knows arbitration well after years as one of baseball's top infielders. From his point of view, the gap between Skubal's request and the Tigers' offer isn't just busines, it's disrespectful.
Why the Skubal Situation Has Everyone Talking
Skubal isn't just any pitcher. He's the reigning face of Detroit's rotation and one of the most dominant arms in baseball. His camp filing at $32 million would shatter the previous arbitration record, while the Tigers' $19 million figure feels, to many around the league, like a lowball.

Even ESPN's Jeff Passan has said the case is unprecedented and unpredictable, but emphasized Skubal's historic résumé, including back-to-back Cy Young Awards, puts him in a completely different category than typical arbitration pitchers.
Donaldson's reaction reflects a growing sentiment: if you're building around a true ace, you don't nickel-and-dime him.
A Bad Look for Detroit's Front Office?
Calling an organization "trash" is extreme, but the optics are rough:
-
Skubal is the best pitcher the Tigers have developed since Justin Verlander.
-
The team is trying to convince fans it's entering a true contention window.
-
A public, contentious arbitration battle risks damaging trust with its cornerstone player.
Even if the process is "just business," as teams often say, perception matters, and Donaldson's comments poured gasoline on a situation that was already simmering.

The Bigger Picture
Skubal will pitch no matter what number the panel awards. But moments like this linger. Players around the league notice how stars are treated. Agents notice. And when long-term extension talks eventually come up, this arbitration fight will absolutely be remembered.
For now, Detroit has an ace who wants to be paid like one, a front office trying to manage the books, and a former MVP publicly torching the organization for how it's handling the moment.
Welcome to the Tarik Skubal era, and the drama that comes with it.
