While the Los Angeles Angels are in the midst of a last-place battle in the American League, the division rival Texas Rangers are just outside of a postseason spot. Tied with the Cleveland Guardians for the final Wild Card position in the AL, the entire season depends on the final month for the Rangers.
One deadline move for Texas could help them edge out the Guardians in the postseason race, and it involves two former Angels. Catcher Logan O'Hoppe and reliever Chase Silseth were sent to Texas in exchange for infield prospect Angel Arredondo before this year's trade deadline, igniting a sell-off for the Halos and a postseason push for the Rangers.

The deal came as a surprise, as two young Angels in O'Hoppe and Silseth were shipped away for just one prospect, especially considering the hope that many still had for O'Hoppe, who was acquired by the Angels back at the 2022 deadline.
The truth is, however, O'Hoppe's time in a Halos uniform didn't go quite as planned, leaving the front office to believe he wasn't the franchise's catcher of the future. His best year came in 2024 when he smashed 20 home runs on a .712 OPS, putting up 2.7 bWAR. From there, it was downhill for the now 26-year-old.
His 2025 campaign saw him take a step back, finishing with just a 75 OPS+ and a fielding run value that put him in just the 2nd percentile . 2026 was supposed to be the bounce-back year, but instead, O'Hoppe continued his downward trend.
In 75 games with the Halos this season, he slashed .209/.271/.295 while continuing to be a negative behind the plate. When the Rangers acquired him at the deadline, they demoted O'Hoppe to Triple-A in hopes he could sharpen his game again.

It seems to have been a smart move by Texas, as he debuted for the club last night as a designated hitter. In his two at-bats, O'Hoppe went 1-2 with a single and a run.
Before the game , O'Hoppe spoke with the media about his second chance in Texas and his time in Anaheim.
"I didn't like the dude in the mirror on or off the field," O'Hoppe told reporters. "It was the hardest four years of my baseball life over there. It taught me a lot. I'm really grateful for that. Met a lot of good people over there, had a lot of good experiences, but it brought a lot of challenges."

"I wouldn't change anything if I could, but the bottom line is it was hard. I'm really happy that I can use what I learned now and help this [Rangers] team as much as I can get in the playoffs," O'Hoppe added.
It's definitely a bummer to hear that O'Hoppe felt that way during his time with the Angels, but it makes it easy to root for him in this next chapter – even if it's with the rival Rangers. It would've been great if he was able to find his joy again with the Halos, but perhaps this change was the only thing that could have saved O'Hoppe.
Some fans may be upset at O'Hoppe for his underwhelming time in Anaheim, but there are many more who will continue to root for the former 23rd-round pick who is playing his part in helping his team make the postseason. Count me as one of them.
