Alabama A&M is set to be the latest visit for Kyree Walker, per a report by On3. The 25-year-old former G-League player is making a visit to the Huntsville, Alabama-based HBCU on Monday, adding an interesting wrinkle to an ongoing trend in college basketball.
Walker took an unconventional route to the professional ranks, opting to bypass college after graduating from Hillcrest Prep in 2020. He trained for the NBA Draft with Chameleon BX in California, going undrafted in 2021 but still earning a Summer League opportunity with the Washington Wizards. He later joined the team’s G League affiliate, the Capital City Go-Go, before continuing his career internationally with stops in Greece, Canada, and Mongolia.
Before turning pro, Walker had already built a strong reputation at the high school level. While at Moreau Catholic High School, he was named MaxPreps National Freshman of the Year and emerged as a highly regarded recruit. He initially committed to Arizona State Sun Devils men’s basketball in 2017 but later reopened his recruitment, ultimately choosing a different path to the next level.
The true definition of amateurism has been hotly debated over the past few years, first in NIL conversations and now with the eligibility of athletes who played overseas and in the G-League. The conversations hit a crescendo when James Nnaji signed with Baylor . Nnaji was selected with the 31st pick in the 2023 NBA Draft by the Detroit Pistons and he was subsequently traded to the Charlotte Hornets. He was also a part of the trade that sent Karl Anthony-Towns to the New York Knicks. But, he elected to enroll at Baylor and join the basketball team in December, sparking a conversation that has only increased over the past few months.
Walker signing with Alabama A&M would certainly be an interesting progression in the trend and could further fortify the team’s prospects in the SWAC under second-year head coach Donte Jackson.
