Former Georgia Bulldogs defensive lineman Xzavier McLeod left the UGA program recently. On Wednesday afternoon, Sept. 2, McLeod was charged with misdemeanor damage to property under the family violence act.
McLeod had spent the past two seasons at Georgia after starting his career at South Carolina. McLeod was booked in Athens-Clarke County Jail and was released on Thursday with a bond of $9.
McLeod's misdemeanor comes from an Aug. 29 incident at his home where he reportedly got into an argument with his wife. McLeod's wife claims she was removing some of her personal belongings and was planning to stay with a friend. However, the police report indicates that McLeod broke two of her rear-view mirrors and yelled at her as he stood on the hood of her car
Georgia coach Kirby Smart shared that McLeod had not been with the team since the early days of Georgia's fall camp.
"This decision was deeply personal and definitely not easy," McLeod said in a statement on why he was stepping away from Georgia football. "After consideration, thought, and seeking guidance from my faith, I have to prioritize my personal well-being. I want everyone to know that I'm at peace with this decision, and I believe this decision is in my best interest."
UGA Head Coach Kirby Smart commented on McLeod during a weekly press conference.
"Xzavier hasn't been with us since the second practice," Smart said. "All the news of Xzavier, everybody's acting like it's something newly released or something. I think he practiced once or twice because he decided to give it up. He just didn't want to play football anymore. Certainly respect that."
