Former Kansas QB David McComb Wins Starting Job at Miami (OH)
While Kansas continues sorting through its own quarterback competition, one former Jayhawk has already secured a starting job elsewhere.
Miami (OH) announced Monday that redshirt freshman David McComb will open the 2026 season as the RedHawks' starting quarterback, beating out returning sophomore Thomas Gotkowski for the job.

McComb transferred from Kansas following the 2025 season after spending one year in Lawrence without appearing in a game. He entered the transfer portal in December and committed to Miami less than a month later.
The move now gives the former highly touted recruit an opportunity to take his first collegiate snaps as a starter.
McComb arrived at Kansas with significant expectations. The 6-foot-4, 220-pound quarterback was an ESPN 300 prospect and one of the highest-rated quarterbacks to commit to the Jayhawks during Lance Leipold's tenure. His size and arm strength made him an intriguing developmental option, but with Jalon Daniels entrenched as the starter and other quarterbacks ahead of him on the depth chart, McComb never had the opportunity to see the field.
Now, he'll get that chance in the MAC. Miami's decision to name McComb QB1 is notable considering he has yet to play a college snap. Winning an FBS starting job with no game experience speaks to how quickly he impressed the RedHawks' coaching staff following his transfer.

His first test won't be an easy one, either. Miami is scheduled to open the season against Pittsburgh, giving McComb an immediate opportunity to show how his game translates against Power Four competition.
The development also adds an interesting layer to Kansas' current quarterback situation.
The Jayhawks are still deciding between Cole Ballard and Isaiah Marshall for the starting role, with Chase Jenkins also competing for snaps. Had McComb remained in Lawrence, he could have added another young option to an already crowded room.
Instead, he's taken a different path and now has a chance to establish himself as a full-time starter.

If McComb performs well in his first season at Miami, he could quickly become one of the more interesting former Jayhawks to follow in 2026 and potentially position himself for bigger opportunities down the road.
