- Former Kentucky Wildcats standout is exploding in summer league play
The Kentucky Wildcats have had a ton of former players compete in the Las Vegas Summer League , a premier offseason showcase of young, up-and-coming talent.
This NBA offseason is no different, but it isn't just recently-drafted Cats that are able to take the court. The only drafted Cats from this past team were Jayden Quaintance and Otega Oweh , the former of which was a first-round pick and the latter of which was taken in the second round.
There are actually several former Cats that will be competing, many of which, like BJ Boston , fans wouldn't really think of, and Amari Williams is among them. The 6-foot-10 versatile forward, who is from Nottingham in the UK, played just one season with the Cats after transferring from Drexel, where he spent four seasons.
Starting 36 games for Kentucky, he shot 56.1% from the field and averaged 10.9 points, 8.5 rebounds and 3.2 assists per game. He can do a little bit of everything on the court, and he showed just that in a recent summer league battle. Williams finished with 23 points, 13 rebounds and two assists.
Williams was a second-round pick with the Orlando Magic in the 2025 NBA Draft, but he was traded to the Boston Celtics the following day. While he didn't get a ton of opportunity during his first season, he did play in 22 games and started two of those. He shot 50% from the field and averaged 1.4 points per game.
With teams like Boston starting to his luxury cap thresholds, it will undoubtedly want to find hidden gems like Williams and get them up to speed and contributing as soon as possible. With this type of summer league performance, there's no reason to think Williams won't get much more opportunity in the near future.
