A former LSU football linebacker is looking for a new team again: Auburn dismissed Xavier Atkins on Oct. 19. ESPN's Pete Thamel reported Atkins' dismissal.
Atkins' removal came less than a week after Auburn coach Alex Golesh said Atkins was suspended for the Georgia game and wouldn't travel with the team. Auburn knocked off Georgia without Atkins.
Golesh was asked about Atkins at his Monday press conference and didn't say much. Golesh said the team would handle the issue in-house. The specific reasons for Atkins' dismissal are unknown, and Auburn has not released a statement.
Atkins released a statement on social media: "I have nothing but respect for Auburn University and will continue to support my teammates this season. My focus is on my health, my family, and on finishing up the academic semester strong, and I'll be entering the transfer portal at the appropriate time."
Atkins had a breakout season with Auburn in 2025. He earned All-SEC honors and led the SEC in tackles for loss. Atkins was having a productive 2026 before his suspension, too.
Atkins signed with LSU in 2024 and spent one year with the Tigers before entering the transfer portal. Atkins, a four-star from Louisiana, appeared in seven games with LSU and was not a big factor in the Tigers' linebacker rotation.
LSU will face Auburn this Saturday at 11 a.m. CT.
