Sam Haggerty 's baseball career is approaching a pretty uncomfortable place. The Cincinnati Reds released the former Seattle Mariners utilityman from Triple-A Louisville on August 6, ending a stay that didn't last more than two months. It was already Haggerty's second release of the 2026 season after the Rangers discarded him in June.
Players with Haggerty's profile don't necessarily receive unlimited chances. He's 32 years old, has a substantial injury history and hasn't produced enough offense to secure a permanent major league role. His versatility and speed has kept the doors open for years. But those doors are beginning to close a little faster now.
Haggerty was one of the sparkplugs that helped the Mariners end their playoff drought in 2022. He slashed .256/.335/.403 with five home runs and 13 stolen bases that year.
A groin injury late in the season prevented him from participating in Seattle's first postseason appearance since 2001.
Haggerty's value always started with his speed and the chaos he created on the bases. He could steal bases, cover multiple positions and change the rhythm of a game without providing too much pop.
Injuries really began taking its toll, eating away as those tools that separated him. Haggerty tore his Achilles while trying to make a play in the outfield for Triple-A Tacoma in May 2024. The injury ended his season, and the Mariners non-tendered him that November.
He responded well enough to keep his career moving. He joined the Rangers and delivered a respectable 98 wRC+ with 12 stolen bases across 64 games in 2025.
Unfortunately, he couldn't stay healthy. He dealt with recurring left ankle inflammation, sent him to the IL twice and eventually landed him on the 60-day IL. Haggerty opened this season with the Rangers but only slashed .159/.213/.182 in 47 plate appearances. His strikeout rate climbed to an unreasonable 34 percent.
He was released on June 7, and the Reds signed him to a minor-league contract less than a week later, offering a chance to rebuild his value at Louisville.
A turnaround never happened. He could only muster a .169/.263/.254 slashline with one home run, five RBIs and two steals over 80 plate appearances. He struck out 23 times and finished with a .517 OPS before being released.
This looks like the beginning of a career crossroads for Haggerty. In his situation, a player gets released, waits for the phone and keeps training because stopping would make the situation feel final. Haggerty still offers experience and positional flexibility. He has played every outfield position and every infield spot except shortstop. Another minor-league opportunity remains possible.
But baseball keeps moving toward younger, healthier and cheaper alternatives. Haggerty must now prove that his speed still matters and that his bat can recover enough to justify a roster spot.
