Former Cleveland Browns wide receiver David Bell is seeking more than $300 million in damages after alleging that an unnecessary surgery nearly killed him and ended his NFL career .
Bell filed the lawsuit against Jefferson Health, surgeon Dr. William Meyers and other defendants, according to reporting from the New York Post . The complaint centers on a core muscle repair procedure that Bell alleges was unnecessary and led to a life-threatening complication.
The lawsuit claims the surgery caused a severe injury to his femoral artery, requiring emergency medical intervention. Bell alleges that the procedure permanently derailed his football career. The claims have not been established in court, and the defendants' responses will be important as the case proceeds.

David Bell's NFL Career Ended After Medical Complications
The Browns selected Bell in the third round of the 2022 NFL Draft, taking the Purdue product with the 99th overall pick. He entered the league with hopes of becoming a reliable contributor in Cleveland's passing game.
Bell played 32 regular-season games across three seasons with the Browns, recording 41 receptions for 408 yards and three touchdowns. His best statistical season came in 2022, when he caught 24 passes for 214 yards as a rookie.
His NFL career ended prematurely after a series of health setbacks. Cleveland placed him on its reserve/retired list in 2025 after he stepped away from football following a life-threatening medical complication.

Bell's lawsuit now seeks financial compensation for the alleged malpractice and the professional opportunities he says he lost. His legal team alleges that the procedure was part of a broader pattern of unnecessary surgeries, claims that will need to be tested through the legal process.
The case raises serious questions about medical decision-making and the risks athletes face when seeking treatment for injuries. For Bell, the legal fight offers a chance to seek accountability over an ordeal he says cost him both his health and his football future.
