When Jack Roslovic signed a two-year, $8 million contract with the Toronto Maple Leafs on July 1, 2026, it marked the end of a journey that had been a year in the making.
The veteran forward spent the 2025-26 season with the Edmonton Oilers after the two sides were unable to reach an agreement the previous summer. Now, Roslovic is finally headed to the team that had long been viewed as one of his preferred destinations.
Back in the summer of 2025, Roslovic entered free agency hoping to secure a long-term contract. The Maple Leafs were frequently mentioned as a possible landing spot, thanks in part to his close relationship with Toronto captain Auston Matthews.
However, the timing simply wasn't right. The Maple Leafs were dealing with significant salary-cap limitations, while Roslovic was looking for greater long-term security. With the two sides unable to find common ground, Roslovic remained unsigned until October, when he agreed to a one-year, $1.5 million contract with the Oilers.
The move ultimately worked out well for both sides. Roslovic scored 21 goals and recorded 36 points in 69 games, rebuilding his value and earning the larger contract he had originally been seeking.
Appearing on Leafs Morning Take , Roslovic explained that discussions with Toronto had actually begun a year earlier. "I think we had some discussions last year even of going, but this year, it was th e right fit. Obviously, some familiarity with some players on the team and a team that wants to make a statement and really improve from last year," Roslovic said.
He also spoke about the opportunity to join a team with championship ambitions.
"I'm excited to join along and be a part of that one, want to strive to get better and make the playoffs and ultimately win a Cup. It kind of starts from training camp. Everyone's at the same starting line, and we're going to have to be the best team we can be," he added.
One of the biggest factors behind the move is Roslovic's long-standing relationship with Matthews. The two played together with the United States National Team Development Program, where they developed chemistry that Toronto hopes can quickly translate to the NHL level.
His versatility should also make him a valuable addition. Roslovic can play either center or wing, giving head coach Jim Hiller several options as he builds his lineup for the upcoming season.
For Roslovic, waiting an extra year ended up working out well. His season in Edmonton helped him rebuild his value, and Toronto finally got the player it had been trying to sign.
