Shortly after the biggest win of Bo Nix 's short professional career, a 33-30 overtime home victory over the Buffalo Bills in the divisional round of the NFL playoffs, Denver Broncos coach Sean Payton announced the former Oregon quarterback would miss the rest of the playoffs with a fractured right ankle.
Payton said Nix sustained the injury three plays before kicker Wil Lutz made the game-winning 23-yard field goal that sent the Broncos to the AFC championship, Nix's first as a pro.
"(Nix) is a tough cookie, Payton told reporters after the game. "I said, 'Listen, I believe you're the second quarterback in his second year to take his team to the (conference) championship game and the first is (Patrick) Mahomes .' ... We'll rise up for the next challenge."
The Broncos will move forward with Jarrett Stidham as their starting quarterback in the wake of the injury.
Nix finished the game 26-for-46 passing for 279 yards, three touchdowns and one interception. The victory was the Broncos' sixth of the season that Nix led a game-winning drive in the fourth quarter or overtime.
Nix will finish his second year with the Broncos with 3,931 yards passing on a 63.4% completion rate with 25 touchdowns and 11 interceptions. He also rushed for 356 yards and five touchdowns.
Nix, the 2023 Pac-12 offensive player of the year at Oregon, threw for 8,101 yards and 74 touchdowns over two seasons with the Ducks , including 45 touchdowns as a senior in 2023. He was drafted 12th overall by the Broncos in the 2024 NFL draft.
The Broncos will play the winner of Sunday's game between the New England Patriots and Houston Texans in the AFC championship game Jan. 25 at Empower Field in Denver.
