Following the Green Bay Packers' humiliating 35-14 loss to the Atlanta Falcons on Thursday night, quarterback Jordan Love is starting to feel the heat. On Tuesday, former Pro Bowl wideout Jarvis Landry said Love has yet to meet expectations, calling his performance this year "flat" while suggesting that the Packers make a change at the end of the season.
"I don't like what I see there right now. I don't know what happens at the end of this year — but I feel like it might be time for a little switch-up over there in Green Bay ," Landry told Kay Adams .
Landry admitted that Love has shown "flashes" of what he could be, but implied that he's yet to prove he can take the next step. He also compared Love's lack of growth to the rise of Tom Brady and Patrick Mahomes , who became "special" despite the talent and circumstances around them.
"When you look around our league, and you look at quarterbacks that we grow and respect, they figure it out, regardless of what their roster looks like," Landry said.
While it may sound unfair to want Love to become a quarterback the caliber of Brady or Mahomes, Landry isn't totally off base.
The Packers are shorthanded, and the roster, especially along the offensive line, isn't ideal, but that's when a truly great quarterback rises to the occasion. So far, Love hasn't been that kind of player.
Love Has Been Historically Underwhelming to Start the Season
Love has thrown for 844 yards, with six touchdowns and just two interceptions in three games. On the surface, that doesn't sound terrible, but his abysmal 52.4 completion percentage is historically lousy.
According to Stathead, Love is only the fifth quarterback since 1933 to start the season with a completion percentage of 52.4 or lower with at least 124 attempts. The others are Kerry Collins (1998), Drew Bledsoe (1995), Jeff Rutledge (1983), and Jack Kemp (1965).
Context is important, and it'd be a disservice not to point out the Packers' offensive line issues, the lack of a running attack, and Matt LaFleur's poor decision-making. But at the end of the day, Love has had plenty of advantages that other quarterbacks before him haven't, and now, hitting his prime years, has pass-catching weapons teams around the league envy. Yet, despite being favored to win in all three games to start the season, the Packers are 1-2, and could easily be 0-3.
While it's true that Love can only do so much, to truly be a standout quarterback in the NFL, so much won't cut it.
