Turner Elson
Before Dominik Shine , the Detroit Red Wings made a feel-good story a reality for Turner Elson .
After playing five seasons for the AHL Grand Rapids Griffins , toward the end of the 2021-22 season, the Red Wings gave veteran forward Elson a two-game recall to the NHL.
It was his first NHL action since a one-game stint with the Calgary Flames in 2015-16. And it would be his farewell appearances as an NHLer.
Four years later, Elson, 33, is still playing pro hockey. And he'll be doing so in a new country when the 2026-27 season gets underway.
Elson has signed with Italian club HC Bolzano of ICEHL.
"When I received the offer, I knew I wanted to play for Bolzano," Elson said on the team's website. "I spoke to several people and heard some really positive things about the club, the city, and the fans. So I'm really happy we've reached an agreement.
"I believe this team has tremendous potential, and I want to help them win in every way I can. I can't wait to get started."
He spent last season in Slovakia with Slovan Bratislava. Elson accounted for 12-27-39 totals in 49 games.
Red Wings Draftees Lift Kelly Cup
The Grand Rapids Griffins didn't make it to the AHL Calder Cup final, but two Detroit draftees were winning a pro championship last week.
Defenseman Jordan Sambrook and forward Sam Stange helped the Florida Everblades capture the ECHL Kelly Cup title. Florida rallied from a 2-0 series deficit by winning four straight games against the Kansas City Mavericks to take the best-of-seven series in six games. Three of Florida's four wins were fashioned in overtime.
Sambrook assisted on the OT winner in Game 4 as the Everblades won 3-2. He was Detroit's 137th overall selection in the 2016 NHL Entry Draft. Sambrook never signed with the Red Wings.
Winning his third Kelly Cup title with the Everblades, Sambrook was good for 1-6-7 numbers in 20 postseason games. He was named a Second Team All-ECHL selection after collecting 46 points and leading the league with a plus-60 rating during the regular season.
Stange netted Florida's second goal in that Game 4 win. He accounted for 3-3-6 totals in 18 playoff games. Detroit tabbed Stange with the 97th overall choice of the 2020 NHL Entry Draft. He also never signed a contract with the Red Wings.
