Rainey elected free agency on October 2 after spending the past two seasons in Detroit's organization. His departure closes a short chapter with the Tigers, where he struggled to establish himself as a regular major league reliever.
The 33-year-old made six appearances for Detroit in 2026. He posted a 3.86 ERA across seven innings, allowing three earned runs while striking out six. However, eight walks in that brief stretch showed how difficult it was for him to consistently command the strike zone.
Tanner Rainey hopes to find another opportunity
Most of Rainey's 2026 season came with Triple-A Toledo, where he logged 47⅔ innings across 45 appearances. He recorded a 3.40 ERA and struck out 67 batters, showing that he could still miss bats at the minor league level.

That strikeout ability could help him attract interest from teams looking for experienced bullpen depth. His control, however, remains an important question for any potential suitor.
Rainey previously built a reputation as a power reliever with the Washington Nationals. He was part of their 2019 World Series championship team and later served as their closer, recording 12 saves in 2022.

Injuries interrupted that progress, including Tommy John surgery in 2022. He has since worked to rebuild his career, spending time with Pittsburgh before joining Detroit's organization.
The Tigers gave him another chance to return to the majors, but his role remained limited. Now, free agency gives Rainey an opportunity to find a club that believes his experience and strikeout potential can translate into a more consistent role.
Detroit, meanwhile, can continue evaluating younger relief options as it reshapes its pitching staff for 2027.
Rainey is not a headline-grabbing free agent, but veteran relievers often find opportunities during the offseason. His next challenge will be convincing a team that his recent minor league production can carry over to the majors.
